Alcumus specs

N 5 hours ago by PikaPika999
Hi, can I ask about how Alcumus gives you points? (I mean the number on the red/orange/green/blue line on top that gains once you get correct answers. I'll just call it the score). I want to get my score up to 100, but I always can't and get stuck at like 98 or sth. Why is this so, and also how does alcumus make that "score" higher?

Let $H>0,\ R>0$ and $O$ be the origin, $P\ (R,\ 0\ ,H).$ In space given the vessel formed by the revolution of the segment $OP$ about $z$-axis. Denote the hight from $O$ to the surface of water by $h.$ When the vessel is filled with water, drain the water out such that the displacement per time is $\sqrt{h}$ at the time of $h,$ that is to say, if the total volume of the water drained out till the time $t$ is $V(t),$ then $\frac{dV}{dt}=\sqrt{h}$ holds. Find the time required for draining out water.

A Ball-Drawing problem
Vivacious_Owl   9
N Monday at 6:15 PM by Vivacious_Owl
Source: Inspired by a certain daily routine of mine
There are N identical black balls in a bag. I randomly take one ball out of the bag. If it is a black ball, I throw it away and put a white ball back into the bag instead. If it is a white ball, I simply throw it away and do not put anything back into the bag. The probability of getting any ball is the same.
Questions:
1. How many times will I need to reach into the bag to empty it?
2. What is the ratio of the expected maximum number of white balls in the bag to N in the limit as N goes to infinity?

There is about a week left before the submission deadline. Please make sure to submit before April 26th 11:59 PM EST!

We give a lot of prizes in addition to our cash prizes and merchandise for top scorers. Last year, we gave the Passion Award (additional $50 cash prize and certificate) to the student who submitted first, as well as Rising Star Awards for 5th and 6th graders who were not in the top 50 overall but impressed judges by showing tremendous promise.

Entries are due in ONE WEEK!
Just a reminder that you can still get partial credit for questions even if you get it wrong! Make sure to submit it, though, so that you can get the credit in the first place! For example, if you show your thought process or get to a certain valuable step in your explanation, you can get points for this!

yep, don't stress about not fully solving all the problems! it's very rare for contestants to get full marks on the problem set.

As a reminder, there are only about 3 days left before the submission deadline. Please make your final revisions in the next day or two and submit! There is a limit to the number of submissions we can take.

The problems are so cool, and this competition is very exciting! How important are the essays in the application, and what general qualities should be mentioned?

Great question! Essays are important, as they show the judges the true character of the applicant. Essays, however, are not weighted as highly as the problem set. For the first essay, you could mention your math competition journey and your reflections on STEM as a result of your experiences. For the second essay, you can be as creative as you want!
