May is an exciting month! National MATHCOUNTS is the second week of May in Washington D.C. and our Founder, Richard Rusczyk will be presenting a seminar, Preparing Strong Math Students for College and Careers, on May 11th.

Are you interested in working towards MATHCOUNTS and don’t know where to start? We have you covered! If you have taken Prealgebra, then you are ready for MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 Basics. Already aiming for State or National MATHCOUNTS and harder AMC 8 problems? Then our MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 Advanced course is for you.

Summer camps are starting next month at the Virtual Campus in math and language arts that are 2 - to 4 - weeks in duration. Spaces are still available - don’t miss your chance to have an enriching summer experience. There are middle and high school competition math camps as well as Math Beasts camps that review key topics coupled with fun explorations covering areas such as graph theory (Math Beasts Camp 6), cryptography (Math Beasts Camp 7-8), and topology (Math Beasts Camp 8-9)!

Challenge: Make every number to 100 using 4 fours

I've seen this attempted a lot but I want to see if the AoPS community can actually do it. Using ONLY 4 fours and math operations, make as many numbers as you can. Try to go in order. I'll start:
$$(4-4)*4*4=0$$$$4-4+4/4=1$$$$4/4+4/4=2$$$$(4+4+4)/4=3$$$$4+(4-4)*4=4$$$$4+4^(4-4)=5$$$$4!/4+4-4=6$$$$4+4-4/4=7$$$$4+4+4-4=8$$
I can't get the exponent in 5 to work if someone knows how to fix it please tell me

For quads just rememebr factoring styles and easily factoring binomails, and how to find the roots of an equation using the quadratic formula, also know how to do complex manipulations to get the answer for a quadratic equation with product and sum of the roots.

just complete the square if you aren't sure on the quadratic formula. Some problems are easier with CTS (ex - solving $x^2+4x+1=0$) so don't rely too heavily on formulas. Some equations are easily factorable.

For graphing, it is helpful to understand transformations of $f(x)=x^2$ and other parent functions; horizontal transformations always come first and do opposite operations in the opposite order of PEMDAS, etc.

$x = \dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^{2} - 4ac}}{2a}$

All you need to know is the minimum/maximum of a quadratic which is $\dfrac{-b}{2a}$ and memorize the discriminant of a function, and the $\pm$ sign, that's it

You get used to the quadratic formula from Algebra 1 and on for the school curicullum. It becomes common knowledge when you go into AMC 10s, but if you're struggling to remember the quadratic formula, catchy songs always help... at least it did for me. I always have a song about the periodic table I sing whenever I'm bored, and the elements just come out of my mouth from thin air.

Yep, I rarely use the quadratic formula when asked to solve a quadratic, because it’s so cumbersome. Not a good approach for math contests. Just complete the square unless you need to do otherwise. Useful functions: $f(x) = |x|, f(x) = x^3, f(x) = \sqrt{x}$.

Hello, I am a Quadratic Vieta user, and anything else seems really confusing for me.
Recommend some sort of AoPS resources that I could use to get better.
I am like at Chap 10 of intro to Algebra A.
I am in Grade 7, should I really know anything else?
