Some users don't want to learn, some other simply ignore advises.
But please follow the following guideline:


To make it short: ALWAYS USE YOUR COMMON SENSE IF POSTING!
If you don't have common sense, don't post.


More specifically:

For new threads:


a) Good, meaningful title:
The title has to say what the problem is about in best way possible.
If that title occured already, it's definitely bad. And contest names aren't good either.
That's in fact a requirement for being able to search old problems.

Examples:
Bad titles:
- "Hard"/"Medium"/"Easy" (if you find it so cool how hard/easy it is, tell it in the post and use a title that tells us the problem)
- "Number Theory" (hey guy, guess why this forum's named that way¿ and is it the only such problem on earth¿)
- "Fibonacci" (there are millions of Fibonacci problems out there, all posted and named the same...)
- "Chinese TST 2003" (does this say anything about the problem¿)
Good titles:
- "On divisors of a³+2b³+4c³-6abc"
- "Number of solutions to x²+y²=6z²"
- "Fibonacci numbers are never squares"


b) Use search function:
Before posting a "new" problem spend at least two, better five, minutes to look if this problem was posted before. If it was, don't repost it. If you have anything important to say on topic, post it in one of the older threads.
If the thread is locked cause of this, use search function.

Update (by Amir Hossein). The best way to search for two keywords in AoPS is to input
[code]+"first keyword" +"second keyword"[/code]
so that any post containing both strings "first word" and "second form".


c) Good problem statement:
Some recent really bad post was:
[quote]$lim_{n\to 1}^{+\infty}\frac{1}{n}-lnn$[/quote]
It contains no question and no answer.
If you do this, too, you are on the best way to get your thread deleted. Write everything clearly, define where your variables come from (and define the "natural" numbers if used). Additionally read your post at least twice before submitting. After you sent it, read it again and use the Edit-Button if necessary to correct errors.


For answers to already existing threads:


d) Of any interest and with content:
Don't post things that are more trivial than completely obvious. For example, if the question is to solve $x^{3}+y^{3}=z^{3}$, do not answer with "$x=y=z=0$ is a solution" only. Either you post any kind of proof or at least something unexpected (like "$x=1337, y=481, z=42$ is the smallest solution). Someone that does not see that $x=y=z=0$ is a solution of the above without your post is completely wrong here, this is an IMO-level forum.
Similar, posting "I have solved this problem" but not posting anything else is not welcome; it even looks that you just want to show off what a genius you are.

e) Well written and checked answers:
Like c) for new threads, check your solutions at least twice for mistakes. And after sending, read it again and use the Edit-Button if necessary to correct errors.



To repeat it: ALWAYS USE YOUR COMMON SENSE IF POSTING!


Everything definitely out of range of common sense will be locked or deleted (exept for new users having less than about 42 posts, they are newbies and need/get some time to learn).

The above rules will be applied from next monday (5. march of 2007).

I originally posted this here, but I moved it to peer-to-peer programs. You can view it there. I'm posting it here so it can reach more people, but let me know if this isn't allowed.

The post:

I'm thinking of creating a project. Here's an overview.

I enjoy Codeforces (http://www.codeforces.com) contests because they are frequent (there is one per week), you get a rating to track your progress, you have more time to think about the problems, and it isn't a huge time commitment.

That is why I am thinking of creating a math version of Codeforces. There might be a few contests per month (probably not one per week), and people can work together to write a contest (similar to Polygon on Codeforces) and propose it to a moderator. Each contest will probably be 5 or so problems in 1-2 hours, similar to Codeforces. After a contest, users can get a rating. I'm thinking of making the problems Medium AIME to Harder AIME level. Update: We can also host mock contests on this website, and the problems can be of easier difficulty.

I'm thinking of building this using django, but it is a lot of features to implement. I'll make the code open source and available on Github :) If you have development experience, let me know by PMing or posting here since you can help me! Update: I feel it is difficult to collaborate on this project, so I changed my mind on getting help :( But, I may need help later on, and I'll post updates (maybe I'll create a forum soon).

Let me know what you think by responding to the poll. Also, feel free to leave thoughts down below. I can probably explain this better.

Maybe 5 guesses is a bit much, especially for casework counting problems where it is easy to miss by one (just guess all numbers within 2 of your answer).

Either there should be a huge penalty for wrong guessing, or limit the number of tries to at most 3.

I don't see why problems would have to be extremely easy, as 2 hours is plenty of time for easy-high AIME.

If this is made, I would definitely support this and perhaps write problems for the rounds.

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments and support! I'm currently building it right now, but since a lot of work is involved, it may take a month or so to get a demo version. When I release a demo version, I plan on creating a test contest with a few simple problems to see how the app works. I'll create a forum and announce that when I finish with the demo. You can work on writing problems in the meantime, but there is no guarantee this app works at all unfortunately. :(

By the way, like Codeforces, I plan on subtracting points when you get a problem wrong. Maybe -50 points for every wrong submission and easy problems are worth 250 points or so. I think I'll keep the difficulty as AIME: maybe 1 easy problem (1-5 range), 2 medium problems (6-10 range), and 2 hard problems (11-15 range)?

Lastly, if you have web development/django experience, let me know here or PM me on AoPS. This can speed up the process a lot, since I'm basically learning a lot of technology from scratch, even though I do have programming experience.

Personally, I think the Mock Contests are good enough, but I support this idea.

Codeforces is a lot more active than AoPS; on Codeforces, a Div. 2 contest can get around 25,000 participants, but on the main forums here, there's usually less than 100 users at any time, and there's even less people in the mock contests forum. Signups for mock contests rarely exceed 100.

Also, I don't think there are many people who are willing to write problems, especially considering that high-quality mid-AIME problems are hard to write.

Participation will be a big challenge. If we have easier problems (AMC level) or get promoted by AoPS, we could get more attention.

I'm thinking we can also use this platform to host mock contests, so users can join a running mock contest from a specific time interval. Also, we can host easier problems (AMC level), but maybe I can create a survey later on to see which levels people prefer.

Also, participation isn't too big of an issue. More participation means more server costs, and I'm thinking of hosting on heroku in the beginning. I don't intend on profiting off of this project.

That's where you and I disagree. I 'mma gonna be a millionaire.

I like the idea, I approve the problems and I think that this is a great initiative. Pm me if you need help with anything, I will try to help.

maybe add different level contests (like div 2 and div 1 in codeforces)

Sounds like a really interesting idea! I have some minimal experience, not sure if it’d be much help, but I’m willing to help out in any way in building the app

Currently, I implemented an announcement system (users can see on the front page), a user registration and login system, and a problemset system which contains all the problems and allows user to submit problems. I plan to work on the contest system that allows users to take contests.

@above, github stores the source code. I haven't deployed the website anywhere yet. Maybe I can post screencast demos on the forum if people are interested.
