Next Steps for AIME
GeniusGiraffe   6
N 2 hours ago by rbcubed13
Hi everyone,

I am a freshmen who got a 181 index this year, with a 111 on AMC 10 and a 7 on AIME.

Now that I have around 6 months to prepare before AMC 10, what should I do to prepare? I am pretty sure I can get >130 on AMC 10 right now.
My goal is to make USA(J)MO next year and do decent on it.

I believe discussion is allowed after yesterday at midnight, correct?
If so, I will put tentative answers on this thread.
By the way, does anyone know the answer to Geometry Problem 5? I was wondering if I got that one right
Also, if you put answers, please put it in a hide tag

NYMC High School Summer Program (HSSP)
missionsqhc   0

I was recently accepted into the black level of New York Math Circle's High School Summer Program (HSSP). I would be taking this program as a prefrosh and wondering if anyone who has experience with this program could comment on it. It's my understanding that the program will heavily focus on problem solving and competitions rather than math research. In that case, would it offer any benefit to an incoming college math major?

BOGTRO's mock MATHCOUNTS
BOGTRO   24
N Feb 12, 2012 by BOGTRO
As MATHCOUNTS season draws closer, something which I am no longer involved with (darn getting older :/), I decided to create another mock MATHCOUNTS round. Similar to my last one, the test will be released sometime (hopefully soon), and you can PM me your answers. This is non-signup.

At this point, although the questions are written, I still need to gauge difficulty and order them. After this, I'll compile them into a nice looking PDF (which may take a while :P) and post it in-thread. At this point, I'm hoping to release several rounds coinciding with Chapter/State/National level, but that's also yet to be determined. I'm going to make an attempt to get this out by the first week of February (so that it will happen before Chapter), but also no guarantees there.

As some will remember (or read the link), in my previous competition there was a Countdown round. I won't have one of these for my Chapter round, since I anticipate a number of perfects. For my State round it's possible, and likely for my National.

Questions? Comments? Anyone care?

Go look at the link in the OP. However, those are significantly more difficult than what my first one will be.

In order to accomodate those who have Chapters tomorrow (Good luck!), and because I'm not getting a response anyway, I'm releasing the test in crappy slightly worse quality.

Rules

Good luck to all participants. In my opinion, this test is more difficult than a normal Chapter round and probably around the difficulty of a typical State round, so do not be discouraged by any score that doesn't meet your expectations. All scores will be released unless you specifically ask me not to. You can access your score by asking me to do so with your submission.

(Files are too large, uploading them to 4shared):
Sprint: http://www.4shared.com/office/ftp6mEMs/MockChapterSprint.html
Target: http://www.4shared.com/office/SkbOd7rG/MockChapterTarget12.html

If you cannot open these files, or when you open the files they are unreadable, PM me and I will send you a text version of the tests.

Clarifications:
General:
All equivalent forms of answers will be accepted as long as they are most simplified. This means that 3/2, 1 1/2, or 1.5 will be accepted as the answer, as will 1 hour, 60 minutes, or 3600 seconds for a problem. Keep in mind that the more work I have to do to determine if your answer is correct and simplified, the higher chance that I mark it wrong.

n-digit numbers refer to nonnegative integers only.
Sprint:
1) You may use (, ), +, -, *, /. No other operations are allowed. Concatenation is not allowed.
4) Integers
8) Only include positive integers.
9) The sum of 2 or more distinct integers
26) You may answer in any format equivalent to the answer (keeping in mind it must be simplified).
27) The circle must be fully contained in the 34x34 view and may be tangent to the sides.
30) x must be a positive integer.

Target:
1) Positive integers (so the integers from 1 to 2011)
2) Real Solutions
3) It is valid to have only 1 group
4) You may answer in any format equivalent to the answer (keeping it mind it must be simplified).
6) Byes do not count as games. A game has one winner and one loser.

I sign up!

This helps us for state competitions though

#1: Are parantheses allowed? (I am asking this because using only the 4 basic operations really doesn't have anything to do with parantheses.)

#4: I think the numbers from 1 to 25 are distinct.

#8: Do the "numbers" include 0 and the negative numbers?

#10: How are we going to express the answer as?

#13: What unit of measurement?

That's all I know of right now (up to #15).

#1: Yes
#4: The problem states "the numbers from 1 to 25". This implies that they are distinct.
#8: No. Only positive integers.
#10: Any discernible form that equates to the answer. Leave your answer in most simplified form, but any interpretation of "simplified form" will be accepted (e.g. 3/2, 1.5, and 1 1/2 are all acceptable).
#13: I don't understand this question - the question states "miles", but this is rather irrelevant to the problem. Keep in mind that you don't have to include units.
