A Call for Moderation Action Against Jcoons91
Richard-Stillhard   3
N 8 minutes ago by llddmmtt1
Good Evening AoPS,

I am not writing to discourage or put any sort of hamper on free speech - I believe this site is a great place to discuss views about the math olympiad scene - but I think it is critical that we find the fine line between productive banter and outright insult. Keeping in mind the severity of this issue and how important it is to be sensitive at this time, especially with MOP emails and USAMO scores releasing, I will adhere to brevity. The user jcoons91 has repeatedly offended various groups, such as the MAA staff and the general community, all in a completely unapologetic manner. It is for these reasons that swift moderation action must be taken against him.

First and foremost, he has demonstrated time and time again his skepticism of MAA's system. To preface the following arguments, I am by no means saying the current system is perfect, and I am also not saying it is wrong to be skeptical of it. However, after being explained to repeatedly that the system is in fact fair (but not necessarily good, I concur), jgoons91 continues to express such sentiments as "USAMTS is complicit". This perfectly captures his lack of true knowledge of the subject, as the USAMTS is an independent organization that runs its contest independently of the MAA, and it is solely MAA's decision to allow high USAMTS scorers to qualify for the AIME. Jcoons91 goes on to claim that he has been "robbed" of his USAJMO qualification due to the extra qualifiers from USAMTS. While an understandable sentiment, blaming it on USAMTS is unfounded and clearly disproven by looking at data and making logical bounds on the number of qualifiers from USAMTS. He has made several other claims criticizing the fairness of the system in unproductive ways, such claiming most 0s on the USAMO are cheaters, but I believe my view has been established on this front by now.

Thus, I will continue, pointing out that jcoons91 has insulted community members in an impactful (albeit sparing) manner. First, regarding a post of his that was deleted, he accused another user of cheating to qualify for the USAMO for being unable to solve a problem he deemed easy and asking for help for it in the High School Math forum. While there certainly were cheaters in this competition cycle, an attack against a specific community member just because jcoons91 happened to be better at that particular type of problem, and furthermore making an accusation as strong and defaming as cheating, is entirely wrong. There have been many similar instances where jcoons91 has expressed sentiments of the like, and this kind of monkeyish behavior and negativity is not necessary in our community at this time.

If you support this cause or agree with its sentiment to some degree, please sign the petition below.

Best,
Richard Stillhard

URGENT JMO problem 1 Misgrade protest (Cost MOP)
bjump   65
N an hour ago by Amkan2022
I was docked 4 points on jmo 1 and it cost me mop. I got 370 777 and 770 777 got into mop.
This google drive link contains my submission to USAJMO day 1
Day 1 Scans
My solution works except for 2 typos. I wrote bijective instead of non bijective at the end, and i wrote min intead of more specifically minimum over Z. After discussion with vsamc, and megarnie they agreed I should have gotten a 7 on this problem because i demostrated that I knew how to solve it. Is it possible to protest my score, and get into MOP.

Help would be greatly appreciated :surrender:
