I am just wondering, will preparing for the AIME and taking AIME Problem Series A+B on AoPS directly help my preparation for the AMC 12? How is the AMC differnt from the AIME in terms of types of problems and difficulty?

I think the last five problem of AMC 12 is much tricker than the AIME,it test out your knowledge debase,so if you are capable of doing the last five problem of AMC 12,then you will did well on AIME,also you must do all the last five problem from AMC 10 from the past...

Uh...no...AIME is harder than AMC12. Why do you think you get 3 hours for the AIME, 12 min/problem, whereas you only get 75 min for the AMC12, 3 min/problem.

However, 1-5 (or as in last year, 1-10...) on AIME are sometimes comparable to 20-25 on the AMC12. The AIME class might help for those problems. But you still need to do some AMC 12 problems to get your speed fast enough.

For some reason I think the first 8 AIME problems are always easier than numbers 22-25 on the AMC 12; idk why.
Anyway, the AMC and AIME are two VERY different tests. Even the questions are built differently, since on the AIME you have like 4 times more time for each problem(not as much as it seems, though, since some of the later problems require at least 25 minutes).
doing AIME problems will DEFINITELY help your AMC 12 score, though, because you are still exercising your math skills. Sometimes, it even improves your AMC 12 score more efficiently than just doing AMC 12 problems.

Well, you have to be good at the AMC to get into the AIME, so undoubtedly there will be some AMC material in the AIME preparation.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment. #1-3 are definitely easier than AMC 12 #20-25. #4-5 are similar to AMC 12 #20-22, and #23-25 are definitely harder. AIME tests your ingenuity so there must be more "steps" involved than AMC 12 problems. But the idea itself isn't difficult. AMC 12's later problems are harder in that they require you to capture the quick insight.

Think this way - AMC 12 #20-25 are created to make sure that not everyone gets a perfect score; AIME #1-5 are there to slow the test-takers so that they feel "short" in time for more harder problems later in the exam. Their purposes are different, and the level of the problems clearly reflect that.
