I can reproduce. I also noticed that sometimes the message will be shorter but much wider with still just the text 42 but will correct itself quickly.

I don't think it is. It's a little odd to have an easter egg randomly pop up like an error message instead of hiding in a corner and I also don't think it would sometimes be wider than normal before correcting itself. It may have been coded as an easter egg but its behaviour seems a little buggy for an easter egg.

note: this only works when you actually make an http request I.e. you have to reload if you click directly from the blog roll page

See my last sentence. I think it was intended to be an easter egg but there's some odd lines that make the error message too wide. What the OP posted about may be an easter egg but I think the part of the message being abnormally wide for a little is a bug.
Alternatively, it could be an error message, but I don't think that's likely.
Finally, it's possible it was used by the developers when they were testing some stuff with the info page and they never removed it.

If you input 42 into Alcumus, you get an award. It is not an error code...
I think it is probably a reference to the Life, the Universe, and Everything.
