May is an exciting month! National MATHCOUNTS is the second week of May in Washington D.C. and our Founder, Richard Rusczyk will be presenting a seminar, Preparing Strong Math Students for College and Careers, on May 11th.

Are you interested in working towards MATHCOUNTS and don’t know where to start? We have you covered! If you have taken Prealgebra, then you are ready for MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 Basics. Already aiming for State or National MATHCOUNTS and harder AMC 8 problems? Then our MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 Advanced course is for you.

Summer camps are starting next month at the Virtual Campus in math and language arts that are 2 - to 4 - weeks in duration. Spaces are still available - don’t miss your chance to have an enriching summer experience. There are middle and high school competition math camps as well as Math Beasts camps that review key topics coupled with fun explorations covering areas such as graph theory (Math Beasts Camp 6), cryptography (Math Beasts Camp 7-8), and topology (Math Beasts Camp 8-9)!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:
[list][*]May 9th, 4:30pm PT/7:30pm ET, Casework 2: Overwhelming Evidence — A Text Adventure, a game where participants will work together to navigate the map, solve puzzles, and win! All are welcome.

Welcome to the Middle School Math Forum! Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the rules.

Overview:
[list]
[*] When you're posting a new topic with a math problem, give the topic a detailed title that includes the subject of the problem (not just "easy problem" or "nice problem")
[*] Stay on topic and be courteous.
[*] Hide solutions!
[*] If you see an inappropriate post in this forum, simply report the post and a moderator will deal with it. Don't make your own post telling people they're not following the rules - that usually just makes the issue worse.
[*] When you post a question that you need help solving, post what you've attempted so far and not just the question. We are here to learn from each other, not to do your homework. :P
[*] Avoid making posts just to thank someone - you can use the upvote function instead
[*] Don't make a new reply just to repeat yourself or comment on the quality of others' posts; instead, post when you have a new insight or question. You can also edit your post if it's the most recent and you want to add more information.
[*] Avoid bumping old posts.
[*] Use GameBot to post alcumus questions.
[*] If you need general MATHCOUNTS/math competition advice, check out the threads below.
[*] Don't post other users' real names.
[*] Advertisements are not allowed. You can advertise your forum on your profile with a link, on your blog, and on user-created forums that permit forum advertisements.

Marathons!

(Restored) FTW and AMC Prep Forum
stjwyl   34
N an hour ago by OutgoingTiger51
PatTheKing806 and Sadas123 created a private forum for people to do math with friends. Doing math in a forum can make it more fun and help motivate people to achieve their goals. We have currencies and games, just like a normal forum.

This is similar to the 'AMC 8 Prep Buddies' Forum (also created by pattheking and sadas), but if anybody wants to join, just type, /join and one of us will add you. This is also a FTW Forum if you are curious too!

The link for this forum is here

Due to a recent event where someone trolled the original forum, all admins were removed from the forum. At that time, no one could restore the original without going through a lot of trouble and using a lot of time. We made a backup forum that was trolled again (presumable by the same admin), so now we are back with a forum with only the most trusted admins.

Please /signup here, not in the now outdated thread.
Thanks!

Once again, please do not post Alcumus and AoPS class problems in this forum. If you have questions about AoPS homework, post them in the course board. Meanwhile, there is a pretty nifty feature called "GameBot" for Alcumus help. GameBot can be accessed via the "discuss" link at the bottom of the Alcumus solution, which is provided after two incorrect responses.

Why do we have this rule? Alcumus is a personalized training tool centered around your unique abilities. If you get a problem wrong, it will adapt and focus on improving your skills in that topic. By asking someone else to do the problem for you, Alcumus won't be able to know that you had trouble on that problem. In most cases, you'll learn more by struggling with the problem yourself, and perhaps even getting it wrong -- and that's okay! Just keep practicing and you'll improve more and more each day.

If you have any questions about a particular problem (after giving it your best shot(s)), or want to ask a question about the solution, feel free to follow the instructions below to discuss the problem.

Discuss Button

Clicking on this link will take you to a post by GameBot that discusses the question, as well as any alternate solutions proposed by other users.

GameBot Popup

All of these GameBot posts live in the Alcumus forum, which you can explore for yourself.

Alcumus Forum

Thank you for following forum rules, and happy mathing!

Note: If you happen to be working on Alcumus for an AoPS class and from the course page, note that this option to discuss the problem via GameBot is not available. Feel free to ask about the question on your class message board!

This is slightly off-topic, but there isn't a Too Hard button for threads anymore, on the new AoPS, right?

Correct, that functionality does not exist on the new site. If you feel that a topic is not at the right level for the forum it is in, you can report the topic, and then a moderator will consider your request for it to be moved.

Yes. Gamebot is the account that handles automated posting for Alcumus and FTW problem discussion topics.

They're being good role models by posting problems rather than having many users create spam.

When I was in middle school, I used the forums as an endless source of FREE, high-quality math problems that were usually accompanied with solutions. I'm trying to promote a similar use of the forums with my posts. I kept a notebook of math problems that peaked my curiosity when I was younger, and I'll be posting from it.

Really, nothing is absolutely wrong or right. No one will get in trouble for "spam" that helps the forums grow and contributes to students' learning. However, users who fill the forums with inside jokes or troll answers only hinder the AoPS community's progress, and quite selfishly too- moderators have to spend time cleaning up after them, and other students can't learn as well. And trust me, I spent a lot of time trying to "fix" this forum, but I know that moderation is only a temporary solution. In order for this forum to be good, we need good posts.

I'm still figuring out these tags, but you can bet future posts will have them. :) If you have any suggestions for making this forum better, you can always PM me!

I don't see how a problem's numerical answer affects the educational value of the problem. Moreover, the problematic users appear to be those who fallaciously generalize upon observing a possibly (but probably not) coincidental string of equal answers to a series of problems, rather than those who are spending time and putting thought into creating problems such that the answers come out to a nice value.

A great example of a series of interesting, educational problems that all had the same answer was this year's ARML super relay. Of course, anyone who assumed the answer before solving would get the final problem incorrect.

Moderators are often younger and handle forum posts, whereas admins are the ones who run the site and manage user accounts.
