ARML Reflection
by Wolstenholme, Jun 9, 2015, 6:13 PM
Under request from jellymoop, I will finally write about ARML 2015.
Thursday
The Chicago team left on Thursday afternoon with two buses. I began the ride at the back of one of the buses sitting next to a bunch of kids all from the same school, but later relocated to the front because jellymoop came onto our bus and wanted to spend good quality time with her bae who I was sitting next to earlier (he was also my roommate at ARML)
. I then sat with these two D teamers from my school and one of them (and his bae from our sister school) decided to teach me how to do a rubiks cube. After about two hours (yes I'm slow, I know) I had my first solo solve, and then later that night broke two minutes! So we arrived at about 11:00 PM and, since I've been on the team a while, I knew that the line to get keys would take FOREVER so I rudely cut to the front of the bus, picked up my key, ran upstairs, showered (only the first couple of people got to shower because lights out was at 12:00) and promptly fell asleep.
Friday
The day started with practice - Chicago uses NYSML's to practice so everything was relatively easy. A team was finally announced and I made it! My roommate made it to (so I won a dollar because I bet him that he would make it) and to her surprise and excitement, jellymoop made it as well! However, this was probably not good for the team because jellymoop and my roommate were now both on A and probably had trouble focusing on the math
. Then I played Ultimate Frisbee for about four hours, the highlight of any ARML experience. Shout outs to my D teamer friend... we have some serious synergy on the field. Unfortunately my roommate didn't play with us - he was probably too busy spending some quality alone time with jellymoop
Then I got chipotle for all the people I knew well with a giftcard for 10 free burritos Chipotle sent me after they saw the Who Wants to be a Mathematician interview. I went back to my room, but my roommate wasn't there (and wouldn't be for hours - he was going on some nice romantic walks with jellymoop
). I then taught my friend mentalgenius how to do a rubiks cube and when my roommate finally got back we watched "The Interview" online. I have heard rumors that some friends of mine also watched a movie instead of going to sleep... a certain inapro-pro movie based on the best-selling trilogy by E.L. James.
I'll talk about the competition in another post, but I think I got all the important bits down already.
