code_7

by math_explorer, Aug 14, 2011, 10:52 PM

So, after three and a half months, I've managed to make about thirty puzzles, all of which have been deleted because they suck. This time round I have a much more realistic goal, though, and so far no shortage of ideas, so I expect I'll be able to release the code_7 puzzlehunt in less than a month. (Considering how CiSRA is just ending and NerdQuest is beginning, though, I might wait longer. So you don't have to look for a team just yet.)

For the small portion of the Games forum frequenters that read this: what format to publish do you think I should use? I'm expecting one or two puzzles to require images, and two or three puzzles to require tables/fancy positioning of text. My options, in my current decreasing order of preference:
  • HTML in public Dropbox folder or a certain free webhost I have a dormant account on, which gives me lots of freedom and lets you play without downloading anything, probably
  • BBCode, which will probably mean no tables (I know I can do them with LaTeX but there'll be a lot of text in them and I don't like forcing a huge image onto AoPS's server).
  • LaTeX/PDF attachment, which gives me lots of freedom but results in a somewhat large file (considering images)
  • HTML single file attachment, which gives me much less freedom and probably no images, but a really small file
  • HTML zip file attachment, which gives me slightly less freedom but should result in a considerably smaller file than PDF
  • Image (PNG probably) single file attachment, which gives me absolute positioning freedom but will probably take up lots of space and just doesn't feel right
  • TXT attachment, which I don't know why I'd choose (BBCode is much better, and if you care enough to want to download the puzzlehunt, you are probably capable of getting it into TXT or whatever form you want)

(Aside: I removed the background deliberately, to simplify things and to reduce the impact of those times when ImageShack randomly supplies everybody with an "Domain not supported" image.)

(No, you do not have to print screen or save any images, I swear.)

(This feels like the most normal post I've made in a long time.)

LaTeX documents are actually remarkably small, even with images (assuming LaTeX or Asymptote is used to create images).

Hmm okay.

If I'm going to use PDF, there's no way my current image puzzle will work on a PDF. I think I'll just release it by itself for advertising effects and come up with something else.

On the other hand putting too much math in my puzzles is probably not a good idea...

Use HTML. Or ZIP. I had enough of these 500KB PDFs. (Yeah, a 40KB DOCX becomes a 500KB PDF. That makes me traumatic.)

If I keep it under 100KB, will that be okay?

Hm, sure. But I suppose there is no image in the PDF then.

...

Or is the 500 KB because I have 10 images in the PDF? :P

Hm... EXE. :D

Wait, don't. I already use EXE in Puzzlehunt Episode 1: Enigmatic Programs. (If it will launch any time soon.)

Seriously in what world are EXEs less bloated than HTML files?
