some blabbing about IMO 2013 just because

by math_explorer, Jul 24, 2013, 1:31 AM

I am terrible at solving-alone-at-home; I totally fakesolved 2 and 3 and then spoiled myself before realizing. Although I'm sure I would have noticed after a serious write-through, and I think I got the hard part of 3. Of course now I have no idea whether all this would have fit into 4h30m with the added nervousness of a contest. I should discipline myself better tomorrow.

These are pretty nice problems, I have to say. The only thing I'm surprised by is how #3 has not yet apparently been bashed.

Also, it seems that all IMO problems get disproportionately many solution posts on AoPS. I'm not sure why; is it just that people still have this idea that "I can solve an IMO problem!" is an achievement with value beyond the intrinsic difficulty of the problem itself?

Yes it is.

People feel good if they can solve one.

Clearly someone who got a gold at a young age and then elected NOT to try to take IMO again (believing it is pointless, and definitely having a very valid reason for saying this) is not going to quite understand. People like to know they can solve "hard problems."

It might be because if you have a somewhat decent solution (or even post) in the IMO forum you're "guaranteed" to get a rating of at least 5 on that post.

But yea for me solving IMO problems is hard.

I think the easier answer to why IMO problem posts get so many solutions is because they get a ton of views, including views from people who don't frequent aops.
