What do you think is the best way to denote the sets of nonnegative integers and of positive integers? I'll be using both a couple times in an article (not really olympiad-related), with the former slightly more. I won't be using the set of integers.

Note that $\mathbb{N}$ can definitely mean either one: please read "The Battle of N" thread and some of JBL's links there. I've always learned it as $0 \not\in \mathbb{N}$ but now I always add a star superscript or a 0 subscript in olympiad proofs, just in case, and this article is going to be combinatorial.

Of course, whatever notation I'll use will be defined, so ambiguity isn't really an issue, but still.

Reasonable possibilities include:

$\mathbb{N}_0, \mathbb{N}$

$\mathbb{N}, \mathbb{N}^*$

$\mathbb{N}_0, \mathbb{N}^*$ (feels redundant in the same article)

$\mathbb{Z}_+, \mathbb{Z}_+^*$

$\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}, \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ (meh hard to distinguish)

$\mathbb{N}, \mathbb{P}$

I always use $\mathbb{Z}^+$ and $\mathbb{Z}^{*+}$. That seems to fit nicely with $\mathbb{R}^2$ for instance.

You're missing the ending quote in "The Battle of N"
EDIT: Fixed :D

I support $\mathbb N$ for the nonnegative integers. We already have $\mathbb Z^+$ for the positive ones. All the stars, zeros, and subscripts are just obnoxious in my opinion.

Why don't you put "Let $\mathbb{N}$ be the set of positive integers" at the top of your problem/solution and go ahead.

Although I use $\mathbb{Z}^+$ and $\mathhbb{Z}^+_0$ for positive/nonnegative integers respectively.

Peano defined 0 to be not a natural number, but eventually mathematicians changed the "1 is a natural number" axiom to "0 is a natural number". (Source: Wikipedia)

So yeah. Ambiguous notation.
