Colleges

by math_explorer, Nov 14, 2013, 9:43 AM

I already asked phiRe about this privately, but it's such an interesting and significant question for me now that I want more answers. Why are so many of you math genius people at/going to MIT, as opposed to other approximately equally "prestigious" (however that is defined) schools? Certain people near me seem to think Princeton or Harvard is better.

(Yeah, I stalked looked up a bunch of people on Facebook. And if you want to promote any other university, feel free.)

(I also know AoPS has a College forum. I think it's too early for me to post a coherent post there, though.)

Well, I think it is a fact that more of these math people get into MIT than the other schools.

That would also explain it, I guess. But then where do the other schools get all their math students? (Or don't they?)

I'm not sure...

maybe they select from a different group of math students?

anyway it seems other schools do fine in getting people, so something has to happen

Go to KAIST so I have some friend. :P

On a more serious note, if you want to go for math (or Mathematical Sciences), KAIST is not a good place, for a rather ridiculous reason. I heard that everyone there is Korean, so the lectures are currently in Korean; by any international student entering the course, the professors are obligated to teach in English, which means you'll be hated by both your classmates and probably your professors too. Note that I haven't confirmed it myself.

...I'll just push you to go to CS. :P

Re MIT: Okay I'm not at MIT. I wanted to enroll but I couldn't made three good essays in the 20-minute auto-logout thing or something I forgot, and I was too lazy to do it some other time, and it was like one or two days to deadline. But when you see a university that tops pretty much every ranking related to your major, why don't you want to go there and hope that you're actually choosing the "best" university available?

Okay I'm not that good in choosing universities.

A big part of it is mit is much easier to get into as a math person than other universities.

Well, if that's the case then it is what it is... but it's not very helpful in helping me decide where I should apply or go to.

I know there are rankings, but they differ a lot in methodology and justification and you can probably find a ranking favoring any given school. The prominent ones don't place MIT very far from the alternatives, so given the skewed distribution I found I wanted to know if there was some other more subjective factor involved.

Another factor might be that math people want to be with other math people, so the community sustains itself.
