IMO results out!

TWN 2G 4S rank 8 yay
And of course congrats to all the other medalists too!

... Does anybody else think that people who got 770777 are weird? :P

I get the "problem 3 stigma" but I thought people of that caliber would be mostly immune to it...

:) It is not easy to find a pure synthetic solution ;)
Quote:
as already said easiest 3 in 10 years problem itself is interesting but would fit better as a 2 or 5
Quote:
by far the hardest #3 in a long period of time
Quote:
it's easy for P3.
Quote:
not so adequate for IMO 3#, don't you think? ... Hopefully we would have got more challenging problems tomorrow :).
Quote:
pretty straightforward for number 3.
Quote:
Probably the easiest third problem in IMO in last 10 years.
Quote:
really beautiful... This problem is not easy to solve, and I would expect an average score of at most 1.2 points for it.

Too easy for a #3?

Well, some people have the "get 7 on everything but 2/3/5/6-geometry" curse.

(EDIT for sake of greater clarity: SOME PEOPLE.)

(Another Edit) As to problem quality: I think they are certainly a good selection of IMO problems (perhaps with the one reservation that 3 is too easy for a #3). They are nice, they are fairly clean.... but none of them are particularly memorable, in my opinion.

There are problems that once I solved them I remembered forever, problems that I gave everyone and was like LOOK AT THIS PROBLEM. In my opinion, this is on the opposite side of the spectrum... there's not too much to say about these set of problems, other than "this was a decent IMO."

So I find it kind of unfortunate that we essentially had 6 of the same kind of problem.... nice, but just nice.

Could you give some examples of problems you really liked?

Russia 2002 Grade 11 #4
USA TSTST 2012 #9

As for easy problems that I really like, look at the entirety of USA HMMT 2012.

But those are more of "legendary problems" (in my opinion); there are lots of problems which are somewhat better than just "nice". The last two years of IMO have had one problem which I very much enjoyed solving during the test.

IMO 2011 had the windmill problem. The fact that the problem is related to halving lines is very motivated, but I think it's still a remarkable relation. I also liked IMO 2012 #3, mainly because I could use LLL on it.

Here's a list of things (probably incomplete) that could make a problem "great":

-Having a step that's extremely hard to directly motivate. Sadly, currently the ability to use indirect motivation is never taught and never explained. This in turn means that the leaders would never agree to put such a problem on the imo, because only a few people would solve it. But I think the use of indirect motivation to find RIDICULOUS steps is probably the single most fun problem-solving experience.

-A problem on which a very deep understanding of the theory helps.

-A problem that has a ton of freedom that lets it be solved in many different ways.

-A problem that is related to something that seems completely different.

-A problem that seems to lend naturally to generalization and extension.

Etc, etc, etc...
