Dude don't congratulate him on the silver.
He is math_explorer, who got a gold at IMO, and actually screwed up APMO pretty badly.
I think 5th is pretty good though for math_explorer's country, the Republic of China. Hmmm a random thing: I wonder why the Taiwanese IMO team doesn't have to call themselves "Chinese Taipei."

I don't know if I "screwed up" this APMO. I think it's very possible that I still got a 77777, but according to the regulation document, each country is limited to 1 gold, 3 silvers-or-better, and 7 bronzes-or-better. I don't know how they broke ties but obviously if the top 10 of three countries all got 77777s they had to do that. I wonder how many people got 77777s and not even a HM.
What we call ourselves basically depends on how much political influence the PRC has towards the countries or entities holding the competition.

That's pretty dumb. But China does very well in IMO, and they don't have lots of influence?
Does it also depend on the great Taiwanese political system which is totally fair and bipartisan, in which the KMT and DPP are in total agreement on whether the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a Chinese country or not?
(Note the massive sarcasm)

For the IMO I think it mostly depends on China's influence over the host country, which varies each year.
Darn, I looked it up and the political motivations behind choosing "Chinese Taipei" are a lot more complex than I thought. But what exactly is "Chinese country" supposed to mean?
