IMO 2012 Close

Well. It's over and I'm home getting used to the wonderful 30+°C weather again.
Wheee.

774/724 for 31 points / tied for 24th with two others and a borderline front-half gold medal (which counts for something, I'm no longer sure what, in the school recommendation system). I seem to consistently underestimate partial credit, but that was corrected after the dinner conversations the day after the contest ended.

Although I wasn't too far off about not getting #5 making gold unlikely: there are only 7 of 51 golds with <7 there, of which I was third. That is less than the 11 gold <7s on #4, because there are so many ways to lose points if you're not sufficiently paranoid about rigor. I am, luckily. Well, it's not like I haven't been getting highly atypical subsets of problems right for two years of selection tests.

By the way... stalking me online is now ridiculously trivial, and a thousand more times so if you can read Chinese. The media are dramatizing the daylights out of this one; I don't think it's even restricted to those in my country. If you've done enough preliminary work you don't even have to leave AoPS! (Why am I even mentioning this?)

I'm not sure what direction this blog should go in now.

nice job on getting your "ridiculously pessimistic" score xD. Also congrats on getting the gold medal :D.

Actually, ridiculously optimistic, but a different point distribution.

AND NO CLEARLY IT IS NOT CHINESE IT IS MANDARIN

Taiwan=/=China

wait is that true

depends on who you ask what

anyway

david yang didn't get #5 either yeah

what a weird year in general

a) guy on the China team gets an 18
b) #5 of all things trolls David Yang
c) U.S. is one point from China and also from getting 6 golds because a 2-time gold named Xiaoyou got a silver this year
d) two Americans topped the Canadian team
e) Germany beat Saudi Arabia

Well, depending on who you ask you also have American =/= U.S. I've been trolled by that sufficiently many times on geography tests and puzzlehunts to always prefer the latter, but to each their own.

Congrats for the gold medal. Blame sickness for not being able to tell this in rl.

Yay 30+ C. But you have winter right? Oh well, a winter in the middle of summer; go to Southern again for a summer in winter. *random blah mode off*

Hm... I'll post your real name online so said "preliminary work" can be cut to just knowing that I posted it :P

YOUR REAL NAME iS BRIAN CHEN

Clearly score distribution and this

http://www.imo-official.org/team_r.aspx?code=TWN&year=2012

You are one of 2 people on the team with a "Western" first name lol.

WHAT YOU ARE ONLY 15 AND YOU ARE IN JUNIOR HIGH? WHAT I AM 15 AND IN HIGH SCHOOL DANG AM I OLDER THAN AN IMO GOLD I FEEL OLD.

ALSO YOU HAVE LEUKEMIA? :(

http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?Type=aALL&ID=201207160017

Do well and stay strong.

Lol seriously identifying a person from Taiwan by the last name Chen, as in "it was the second time 15-year-old Chen,...." but there were no other Chens... on a team of 6 Taiwanese people. That is impossible.

Yeah okay there go all my not-so-secret secrets.

Do we agree on the definitions of "junior high" and "high school", though? They're 7th ~ 9th resp. 10th ~ 12th grade over here, just to be sure. Wikipedia is very hand-wavy about the U.S.

Also I'm pretty sure being "older than an IMO gold" should not be news to you or most other people on this site.

Okay I'm now going to stalk people for a while.

Leukimia? I know you have some disease but I never managed to identify it (not that I'm actively looking for it :P ).

Comment above: Oh dang I'm screwed. Let the targeting cursor off me.

Oh well junior high is something-8th in US (where something is 7th, 6th, or even 5th like my junior high) and high is 9-12th, so actually I AM NOT NECESSARILY OLDER THAN YOU YES

and no that is bad news i need to get an imo gold lolololololololol

then again there are imo golds who were at least as bad as i am now at math when they were my age

and what people did in the past have nothing to do with the future

anyway you are a boss mr. chen you have leukemia and you are like I DON'T CARE I WILL BE A REALLY YOUNG IMO GOLD MEDALIST

Also I saw somewhere that IAK where chaotic's initials, so he is OBVIOUSLY IVAN ADRIAN KOSWARA

lol
