Spring Break

by shiningsunnyday, Mar 25, 2016, 6:34 AM

So it's been almost a week since the AIME, and boy getting over her is hard. What calms me down a bit is that many people much more qualified than me, who've done more math than me, didn't even qualify for the AIME (take Wiggle Wam and Calculus123, for example). I think I'm already blessed to have even a shot at JMO after just a bit more than one year of competition math (yes, look when I joined AoPS). For those of you who watch basketball, Steph Curry just doesn't work his magic every game. What most people don't see is that behind his $45+$ three-point percentage is the $90$ three-point percentage in practice, the fact that he practices his three-pointer with half-court shots. I know, that if I want to succeed next year, I'm going to have to bring my game to a whole new level.

Anyways, I'll be returning to AMSP again this summer, taking NT 2 and Alg 3.5 (I don't think they conflict, do they? If they do, I'll take Geo 2). I'm definitely taking Olympiad Geometry this summer, so I'll be working on my 108 Alg and 106 Geo books between now and summer. In addition, I'll be slowly working through the challenge problems of Interm CP, so I can officially get into some hard olympiad stuff this summer and preparing to go all-out in WOOT next year!

As for this Spring Break, my goals are:

1. Catch up on school
-Study with my PrincetonReview book for upcoming AP Exam.
-Do Learnerator questions (online APUSH questions).
-Actually conduct my biology experiment (it involves me bathing, lol).
2. Get decent at mechanics
-Do a lot of my Morin's book, skipping around and stuff to be efficient
3. Stop sucking at synethic geometry
-106 Geo! Maybe 2-3 problems a day?
4. Get to some entry-level olympiad Alg
-108 Alg
-Reviewing some of my Alg 2.5 materials from last summer

EDIT: I'm at a resort until tomorrow, so I'll get around to posting some nice math problems soon, hopefully. :)

I follow basketball a little bit, and I think Steph Curry also shows that even the best go through low points/slumps every now and then (ex. GSW's loss to the Spurs). However, things will eventually improve if one keeps persevering (I think he scored 33 just a couple of days later against the Clippers), so try not to be discouraged.

Also, good luck in the future with your math endeavors! :D

You too, we should probably check over our OMO answers...

I finished Intro to Geo, but I'm definitely not quite ready for Olympiad Geo. What resource do you think is good as a kind of "Intermediate Geo?"

I can only speak for two books: 106 and Evan Chen's new book. 106 is good and I've been using it for a while. It contains a lot of knowledge/theorems/examples though the pace is pretty fast. I think you can also start on section 1 - fundamentals of Evan Chen's new book. I've been skimming over some stuff and it's amazing. I heard the UKmT and Geo revisited are also good but I can't speak for them.

"Cause you wiggle too much nowadays."

If that has anything to do with the Jason Derulo song, I will be highly unimpressed.

Oops sorry :(

Last year I took NT2+Alg3.5 at first then switched into NT2+Geo2. I found Geo 2 a good big harder than NT2, and Alg 3.5 was harder than both imo.

Btw, if you are well-versed in mods and orders and such, then I wouldn't recommend taking NT2 as you could probably get more out of another class.

Thanks for the advice. I took NT 2 at first last year as well, but found it too hard so I switched. And I'm not well-versed in mods and orders...

The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
