Birthday+NEW BOOKS+Euclid+Life

Birthday

So my birthday dinner was a really good one at this steak restaurant, which meant good food. But I hate when restaurants do this: (look at first pic)

New books

So 104 NT and 103 Trig arrived today. Welcome to the family! 102 and 107 haven't yet, but I'll add to this post once they do. (look at second pic) Soooooooo excited. Quick overview:

104 NT:
-Really self-contained
-Starts from very basics, like primes, definition of divisibility, etc. to orders, mods, etc. most of which I've experienced somewhat but the problems can get REALLY tricky (for me, since NT is my kryptonite)
P50 wrote:
Prove that $$\left \lfloor{\frac{(n-1)!}{n(n+1)}}\right \rfloor$$is even for every positive integer $n.$

103 Trig:
-Even better than expected, self-contained as well
-Starts from the VERY basics like definition of each trig function, slowly deriving EVERY formula like addition, subtraction, double angle, etc. etc.
-After every formula introduced, includes other great applications like 3D coordinates, applications in Euclidean Geo, to tricky inequalities to things like the nth Chebyshev polynomial
-Like 104, most theory I already know, but the problems look REALLY good
P54 wrote:
Let $ABC$ be a triangle, and let $x$ be a nonnegative real number. Prove that $$a^x \cos A + b^x \cos B + c^x \cos C \le \frac{1}{2}(a^x+b^x+c^x).$$

Euclid

Occurred last Wednesday. It was quite different from American problems; I didn't know when to bash and when not to. Knowing that this is a Canadian problem, I eventually gave up finding the "smart" way to do some of them (because based on past experience there probably isn't one), ending up with a lot of UGLY bashes, two of which I didn't finish, so I simply wrote the rest of my solution outline onto the sheet and hope my graders will be lenient. I didn't prepare at all, so I'm not expecting a high score.

Anyways...

Non-Math Life

AoPS is life.

Stuff that's going on that I don't want to do

Stuff that's going on that I sort of want to do

Stuff that's going on that I actually want to do

104 NT is pretty tricky, the corresponding sections (intro and advanced problems) are trickier than 105/106/107/108 in my opinion

also you can download 101 alg and 103 trig for free (shhh...)

That's kind of a bad thing to do...

ugh I definitely understand your frustration with school

I've been running on empty this past week

Also, I should probably get the 100 series sometime; a lot of the problems look interesting

Yes yes same. You should! The books are great.

Wait why did you buy them then lol

??? What you talking about. These are legit paid-for products. It's immoral to only get it online and you should honor the author (although pirating is probably the reason a lot of the books are no longer in the xyz bookstore.

Personally, I learn better with hardcopy books (since I can draw on geo diagrams and it's just nicer), so I would definitely rather pay to get a hardcopy than download a free one.

Yup me too. I feel I have a more intimate relationship with the book this way.

Yeah but if you're solving problems that's one thing. I'm talking about facebook, instagram, youtube, and arguing about who should be shipped with who on aops. xP

Lol use self-control app for that. Honestly AoPS is the most addictive site for me XP.

The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
