USAMO Day 2

by shiningsunnyday, Apr 21, 2017, 12:42 AM

7/0-1/0

I guess my MOP dream will forever remain a dream...

First spent a solid 10 mins crying about the subject distribution. Then had P4 solved in exactly one hour and written up my induction solution in the next 30 mins. Then spent rest of time (~2.5 hours) flailing around and making incorrect claims on 5 and 6 so most likely 7/0/0.

That puts me at a total of 14-16. I really hope I can get a point or two from P2 or maybe P5 to give me a bit of breathing room above the massive tie that'll probably occur at 14.

Even though I know a lot of factors don't work your way, it still would've been nice if all the olympiad geo configs/lemmas I studied didn't get learned for nothing...

I guess I'll just be thankful for making it to this position this year in the first place?

Hey, great job for making it through. Don't feel bad about it; realize that you're extremely talented in the first place for someone who started competition math two years ago. You've made it so far already; keep chasing gals goals and I'm sure you'll accomplish a lot. Take it from me, "Michael Sun" will be a household name in the future if you keep intellectually growing at this rate :)

The way I see it nobody got close to $5$ problems solved or higher which means that cutoffs should be lower this year and similar to the 2015 MOP cutoff(green was $11$ and blue was $16$ due to the hard #1) and this was similar. Keep hope alive! :) Also it's sad to think that the beautiful subject called geometry is becoming like Olympiad Inequalities(relatively obscure). So sorry for USAMO :( but wish you the best of luck on college aspirations! :)

Thanks!

you must believe in yourself ssd

the way I see it @TJ nobody did much better than that, from what I've heard - so it must have been really hard for everyone

The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
