What a day today

by shiningsunnyday, Oct 25, 2016, 10:12 AM

...I turned in the AoPS-club promo video today to the exec student council. It will be shown in front of 700 or so people (the whole school) next Monday during the Halloween assembly. I hope the 10 hours of my life spent will be worth it (I stayed up till 2 AM last night and even skipped first period today to finish it). :\

I'll have a link of the video to share with y'all after the assembly (I'm thinking of uploading it on dropbox??).

Afterwards, I had my weekly club meeting. It was on basic modular arithmetic (definition, and the very basic properties). For some reason, the members stopped paying attention when I finished defining it. I think the notation was too terrifying for those who've never seen it, and I didn't explain the concept as well as I would've liked. Spreading interest in math is hard...

After school, it was Mu Alpha Theta induction ceremony which went same as last year.

Right afterwards, I met with my first MAT tutoring student of the year to prepare him for his Precalc quiz the next day on quadratics (vertex-form, quadratic inequalities). Just as I was taught by my Intro Alg B instructor 2 years ago (my finish AoPS class!), I showed him the WHY behind each problem as opposed to just algorithmically describing the steps to solve a specific kind of problem (this is also one of my main points in the promo video). For example, one of his hw questions that he was struggling was: solve $(x-2)(x-3) < 0.$ He told me that if it's $<$ then you must take the interval between the roots and otherwise take the two intervals outside the roots. Instead, I emphasized the simple idea that if the product of any two numbers is negative, then one must be positive and the other negative (his eyes lighted up). I plotted $2, 3$ on a number line and explained to him when the signs of the factors change, so the only way to make one of them positive and the other negative is the interval from 2 to 3.

To add a cherry on top, two students nearby overheard the entire session, and one of them said she wants to request me as a tutor.

<3

Anyways I should probably get started on the 2-3 hours worth of Javascript that I have to catch up on, and do a full SAT test tonight. Also I attempted the Advanced PO on Sunday and got scorched alive (no geo OR NT >.<).

There's so much going on in WOOT it's awesome and pressuring at the same time...

Also guys sorry for not keeping the POTD blog updated (I recommend you subscribe to the blog so when a new post does come out you'll get notified), though I'll try to post a problem tonight.

But those students, not paying attention? They could at the least pretend to pay attention to be polite :(. hope that they start listening to the meetings after the vid

Idk, may have been my fault for not explaining well, oops

Nice. At my school their reaction is "I don't care about this 'understanding' stuff I just need the rule now please please".

Yea that's the point

Hello SSD, I've been following your blog for some time. Keep in mind my grammar isn't exactly the best.

I get the feeling that you're a very unique student. Living in a school that is more liberal arts-focused than STEM-focused, your love for math has had you isolated from many potential friends. I have heard that you were in great relationship with some of them in the past, but things happened, life moves on, and here are you today. All good.

Now, something I want you to learn today is to stand in other people's shoes to view the world. Perhaps you aren't actually as lonely as you think. Or perhaps there are other reasons why your previous friends had left you, some reason that maybe you were unconscious of. Life is never a black and white thing, try to add a bit more color in your life other than everything you're doing right now.

After all, spoiled talent is wasted talent.

The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
