A USAMO Dream... is this it?

by shiningsunnyday, Sep 5, 2016, 12:13 PM

AMC's banned in international territories.

Which would mean I'll have to fly to the US to take the AMC

And even if I fly, I can take at most one of A or B - the duration between is simply too long for me to be away from school. Everything I've worked at for. All condensed into 75 mins.

Not to mention the endless logistical issues and getting permission from my school, not to mention the jet lag and severe possibility of underperformance, the sacrifices my dad will have to make (who will have to travel with me), the stress, the round trip airfare cost, and all the lessons/projects/tests/homework I'll have to make up on. And if I make AIME or USAMO, I would have to make more round trips, aggravating the issues above, all of this in near the end of my junior year, in the midst of SAT/GPA/AP/(and whatever else I'm pursuing then) season, and the endless negotiations with my school and teachers and counselors (there is an extremely strict attendance policy and graduation policy).

Is contest math even worth pursuing for me anymore?

Some of these seem pretty tough to work out; it may be difficult to get everything you need. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't try though!) However, I will say that

while unpleasant is definitely not a deal breaker. In particular, during my five years of contest math I never took a B test (my school would only offer A) and things still ended up working out :)

Also, it may be worth noting that I posted almost those exact words, namely

two years ago. Granted, they were in different situations (failed to qualify for USAMO in my junior year), but still, I thought the purpose of contest math was shot because I no longer had access to some end goal, namely MOP.

My point is that this is a bad way to look at it. Sure, contests are the means by which we "achieve" through competition math (obviously), but it seems that you've found a love for this stuff beyond that. You really like doing problems - you've found a passion that while not necessarily transferrable outside of high school will pay dividends in the long run. Don't let a single logistical difficulty turn all of that around. And besides, there's more to life than AMC/AIME. (On a different note, maybe try a Chinese contest, or play around with HMMT/PUMaC/CMIMC/others.)

This might not be the best advice, but man English is hard. Good luck!

Thanks much! What you said is really inspiring - I should let nothing hinder my passion for math. At the end of the day, that's what matters.

^djmm, ssd is an american citizen, so that might give him troubles in joining chinese contests(?). also, his school doesn’t join that many math contests other than the amc series anyway

the eternal question. i mean, it’s always the question. it’s the primary existential question for competitive mathematics. until now, i still do not have any answer to the question :( i haven’t found a good reason to/not to yet. so i’m troubled whoops

come on ssd, you can do this! this does not have to be the end. this is only a temporary setback at worst, and there are ways to potentially solve this. let’s be optimistic!

Thanks

Don't lose hope! They haven't announced it yet.
And I know this is easier said than done, but don't stop, like this guy:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Károly_Takács

That really sucks. Well, I wonder if any companies in California (math competition prep schools) will offer to provide transportation by picking you up from the airport and stuff so that your dad wouldn't have to go with you. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try to reach out. All they would have to do is pick you up from the airport and provide transportation, and you could just pay them some money. It might be worth a shot.

But just remember, with some coffee you can be like v_enhance and still get 41 on USAMO while taking the test with relatively no sleep.

Also, have you considered coming to a private school in the U.S.?

Maybe (there'll be so much to figure out when the time comes). Also I'm a junior so out of question.

You have other goals, namely the USAPhO, you can still most likely pursue that, the prolem solving skills from math can transfer into Physics skills

There's so much concepts to learn, plus the fact I'm still reined back by being forced to take Physics 1.

Hmm, well it seems that you can take the AMC as long as your school is registered with one of their international partners (and China is included). There may be hope for you yet!

Hm my principal is still figuring stuff out at this moment

The only thing that makes contest math worth pursuing is the thing that keeps you from quitting contest math. I'd say that if you still would like to pursue it - which I'm sure you are - then do it.

To be fair I think you can still take the AMCs this year - but if not, pack your bags, because your path will truly be a long one. Perhaps there's more risk- but looking back, it's not the achievements so much as the journey.

That's deep, really good!

Dude it's okay :) I think your school can request to that guy who can approve your school to take AMC's; so your dream is not over yet! Even if it wasn't possible for you to take the AMC's, you shouldn't let your whole life affected by that one fact. Just keep doing what you love!

Thanks skip

http://artofproblemsolving.com/community/c127371h1301389 Whiteawesomesun has the same problem, but in whiteawesomesun's last comment he said "Wait good news, China might still be able to take part." You might wanna talk with him, you guys might think of something:) Can you still take it if you have American citizenship? Have you asked any other top schools near you if they have a plan to take it? Don't let this discourage you, you can do it and I believe in you!!! I don't know what to say, but look at these links, they may help:

China seems to be one of the international partners

Yea... my school is still figuring stuff out

Hey been a little busy so I didn't get to respond to this any sooner.
Unfortunately, this is basically a repeat of stuff that others said, but I'll say it anyways. Note this is purely in my opinion, and you should use your own, best judgement and decide for yourself.

Short Answer

Long Answer

Best of luck!

Thanks yo good luck
