misspelled names rant

if you're asian or have a unique/uniquely spelled name, you'll understand this
welcome to flec rants for 1 hour bye

i hate it when people CANT SPELL UR ASIAN NAME RIGHT
especially if ur chinese, korean, japanese, etc.
i'll be using korean as an example since i'm korean

i go by the korean name "현", or "현이". in english, it is spelled "hyun yi" or "hyun".
people keep spelling it "hyunee", "hyunnie", or even "hyeon" .. ... ..

another examples is with korean names that end with "우"
people, it's not "ooh." it's "woo". T^T
not "teh"; it's "tae". (BTS FANS WILL KNOW THIS :wow:

ok im not korean and im not a korean expert.
but from what ive learned from korean, direct romanization of "현" and "현이", are "hyeon" and "hyeoni" respectively.(the y acts as a consanant and the e acts as an accent indicator, in this case short, for the o)
and the circle thing makes it silent when at the beginning of a character.
i might be wrong.

not asian but can relate.
my name is spelled louis, pronounced "lewis" and i am part mexican. so sometimes people write my name as "lewis". or sometimes they call me "luis", which i hate because it sounds similar to the feminine counterpart "louise".
coming across someone who can actually pronounce and write my name properly is rare.

My name is Chinese and it's only 4 letters and it's really easy to spell :>
My last name is also pretty easy to spell but so many people mispronounce it that I don't even care anymore

I have a Russian friend who's name is also... uncommon here (as in my school :PP) and it took me a while to learn how to pronounce her last name and we misspell both names all the time :PP

Most people that I know in my school with uncommon names usually have easy to spell names, but there's always some kind of misconception, mainly pronunciation but there was this 50% Turkish guy (pretty sure he's mixed ethnicity) who has a masculine Turkish name but it sounds feminine to non-Turks so everyone thought he was a girl when he first came in like 2nd grade (the long hair wasn't helping) but then puberty hit hard and now there's no more misconceptions with gender in my grade :DD

So there's my experience + like 5 other people's :PP

@llr google translate/other translate devices tend to say "hyeon" more often because it is easier to pronounce for most americans, but i think personally that "hyun" is the correct translation of it. almost all koreans spell it as "hyun", and "yeon" is usually for "연".

like in english, the name "sophia" is spelled with ph but sometimes it's spelled "sofia" but it is less common.

in my case, i spell it with a "hyun", so consider it wrong when people say "hyeon."

hope that makes sense ahh. ur not entirely wrong though btw

@may omg if the yearbook spelled my first name wrong i'd be so irritated

yeah there are two ways to spell my name and the one thats not mine is way more common so they use that version
they also tend to put an h in between but yeah

im probably gonna learn mccune-reischauer romanization and advanced pronunciation at some point.

my name is really easy cause its a generic white kid name
but the rest of my family has their korean names for their first name
for me it's my middle name so it's usually not a hinderance
but in preschool (when i still used my korean name) everyone would call me "june" or some other similar j name but it's actually "jiyoon"

the second letter of my last name is i, but theres a much more common last name with the same pronounciation which has its second letter as e. my last name often gets misspelled like that

my first name is only 3 letters but it still gets messed up quite a lot coz it has an e which should be pronounced like the a(not a typo) in taste but is wrongly pronounced as the second e in elephant
