[11/17/2023] amc10b, piano+singing update, honest heelys review

by flec, Nov 18, 2023, 6:45 AM

life update with high's and low's and quite a lot of stuff
amc10b: was better than amc10a if you look at my score (i got in the 80's :w00t: 5 days study = 76.5 ;; 1 week study = 81 so that's pretty good actually!) if my score goes up by 4.5 every 2 days i would be getting perfects at the end of the month
however amc10b was very ego crushing to say in the least
i took amc10a at my school so it was with high schoolers since i am very much a high schooler
since my school didn't offer 10b, i had to go to a separate math class place to take it (kind of like aops but another place)

so there were people of all ages, and everyone except me was chinese. and i'm pretty sure i was the oldest one there.
anyways my heart dropped as i saw the first girl there. i was like "there is no way she is taking the amc10."
i actually had a small convo with her where i asked her how old she was. she was twelve.
that wasn't the worst, though.
this one, i kid you not, 4'1" kid who looked like he was no older than eight years old walked in wearing spiderman pajamas. three minutes later his friend walked in, even shorter than him, and looked maybe seven years old. i am not kidding nor exaggerating.

so i started the test already wanting to cry
and then the dude behind me seemingly had a cold or something but still came and coughed really really really loudly every six seconds for the next hour and fifteen minutes.
the first time he did it i whirled around and i feel like my proctor thought i was looking at his answers so i was rly nervous but it doesn't matter anyways since i definitely didn't qual for aime.
so the test was over, i luckily left some blank because i was self doubting and the answers turned out to be wrong anyways so yayay i didn't lose points.
i managed to solve #18 which is the farthest i've ever gone on an amc so yay me again
as soon as that stupid test was over i left and never looked back and told my mom "i'm never coming to this place to take amc ever again i hate my life now"
and she said "you need to grow a backbone."
piano+singing update: i kind of started playing piano again because i listened to this super pretty piece and was motivated again for the first time in like eight months.
the piece i'm playing is the lark by glinka/balakirev. you should listen to it sometime ;; it's really pretty and is one of my all time fav piano pieces! next in line after i finish this is probably tempest sonata 3rd movement which is also a favourite piece of mine but it depends on whether i finish this one.
it seems easy at first and then there's this whole scale part. i have the asian trauma of practicing scales for 3 hours every day so i'm good at scales but i can't do scales with both hands at the same time even though i'm ambidextrous because i have a skill issue.
besides i haven't played piano/got taught by a teacher in almost 8 years so (i'm mostly self-taught now)

for singing i've been not doing anything serious because i also have a skill issue with singing but maybe i will post a cover sometime. idk what song to do though ill be indecisive for sure.
heely's review: for those who don't know what a heely is because they were nonexistent in the 2010's, heely's are shoes with wheels on the back.
my mom got them for me because 10-year-old me begged for them and because she was proud of me for studying my butt off for amc's she surprised me w them.
me: former figure skater, almost took roller-derby classes, rode a bike at 5, good with anything with wheels on them
me: falls 500 times w heely's
it took almost a full hour for me to ride them without holding onto a wall for dear life.
they are much harder than you think

anyways i'm kind of hooked lol they're bringing out the 10-year-old me again
i will prob not wear them to school unless it's like crazy shoe day again because 1) i dont want to fall in front of my school 2) the trend is kind of gone now 3) everyones gonna bully me and if i run over their feet in revenge i'm going to get in trouble so
i've just been riding them inside my house now. there are some times in school where i really wish i could just put heely's on though esp when i was late to my bus yesterday and had to sprint around the whole school in 3 minutes
hope everyone had a good week.
the radio channel i listen to has already started playing christmas carols and to get in the mood, i put on these cute silver reindeer-pulling-a-sled earrings.
i have one piercing on one ear and two on the other asymmetrical like my entire life
for those wondering if piercings hurt, they do (they feel like a shot but the pain goes away much quicker). but it's not that bad and it's definitely worth it. i can't say anything about cartilage piercings though because i've never gotten one even though i really want to. but for the first and second piercings on the earlobe it's not that bad even though i'm anxious about needles too.

procrastination so bad this week
i wrote like 300 words for this entry
and wrote a single sentence for my english final in like 3 hours

theres so many crazy smart people that are younger than you it totally can be ego crushing
everyone gets that feeling though so keep your head up (: focus on yourself

interesting choice of piercings
how old were u when u got ur ears pierced

oh yeah and i listened to the piece you mentioned
its very interesting lots of fermatas in the beginning
but its quite beautiful
and holy shoot those scales

i got my first piercings (one on each side) at 13, then got my second one at 14. pretty late lol

i LOVE the fermatas in the piece they make it sound so alive
i can play some of the beginning pretty well now ;; i'm on the part wit the repeating chords and the official "melody" yk
i like flats more than sharps but sight reading is a pain with those i keep messing up and im like "that doesn't sound right bruh" so i have to watch a video

also i decided not to do tempest sonata because i'm sorry but i have no attention span to finish a seven minute piece and although the beginning is SOSOSOOSO pretty i don't like the ones that sound too classical-ly if you get what i mean because i was traumatized by endless sonatas as a kid.

idk what else to play though
because the ones i am interested in are either super hard or too long or impossible because of my finger length/span so

There’s always a lot of very young people taking these tests, but they’ll get nowhere for the simple reason that when they get good enough to qualify for olympiad-style competitions, they won’t be mature enough to handle the hours of being able to solve nothing. They’ll never practice Olympiad problems and so they’ll always be stuck with a qualification, and get no further, which naturally leads to them quitting math.

lol when theres 5 flats i just think of which ones are natural and then play the rest flat its easier but prolly not how ur supposed to-- just like ok if theres c's or f's theyre natural and thats it
big brain

duuude i forgot about those shoes
thats fun tho

ok so i just have one piercing in each ear and ive had it since like second grade
but recently ive been thinking and i kinda wanna get another one (llike on both ears)
idk cause when i first got my ears pierced, my ears always had all kinds of problems
like sometimes they would hurt really bad with any earrings in and they were just really annoying and my ears would turn bright red
theyre fine now and i wear earrings like every day but i just dont want that to happen with another piercing yk
im thinking maybe for christmas tho
cause they look so prettyy
lol i described the pain as someone stapling your ear
its kinda what the thingy looks like

lol last year I took 10b with Think Academy and the girl sitting in front of me was someone who qualified aime in 6th grade :sob: she's really pro (she was in 6th grade back then and qualed aime)
then this boy sitting behind me was someone from my grade who qualed jmo in 7th
and then a kid a grade lower than me who qualed aime in 5th (he was in 7th grade back then but he'll likely jmo qual this year in 8th grade)
those are all kids from my school
imagine the pressure

omg heely's
I used to have one back when I was really small, but then I grew and no more heely's for me

lark is soo beautiful
just listened to it on youtube
I shall learn it over thanksgiving break wheeee the sheet music doesn't look too bad
although watch me forget about this in a day

I haven't played the piano for almost 2.5 years already after I passed a suspicious ABRSM exam :sob:
really wanted to pick up piano again but like school rip
the last pieces I played before I quitted piano were Chopin's Minute Waltz (you've definitely heard it before ahh it's really good) and Mozart's 12 Variations of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (kinda cringe name but it's really really really good)

i cried while playing vivaldi summer because of scales
let's see how the lark goes

@helena OMG I TOOK IT AT THINK ACADEMY TOO THERE ARE SO MANY YOUNG PPL THERE WHAT

@crazoreo as a person with 3 piercings who hasn't gotten a single problem yet, use ointment on your ears or whatever its called that helps a LOT
also pierce your ears with pure gold earrings to avoid potential allergies
make sure they are loose earrings (preferably with the ball that you screw on in the ends and not something that you press against your ears) so that your ears can breathe if that makes sense
and don't take them out too early (i waited 3 months for mine)
trust me second piercings are SO worth it. i wear earrings that connect my first + second piercings and they are the cutest

@awesomeming i mean i'm 15 and i still rage quit if i can't do something in under an hour. well maybe not rage quit, but definitely rage. but i keep going out of fury and dont quit i just am silently there

@LJcoder omg thats a really pretty piece. dont know if i have the skill to do that and also that piece is 8 minutes and i cannot focus that long LOL

@everestbaker ikr i was listening to it and i was like "omg finally a pretty, medium-length piece i can play" and then i saw the scales and i was like "omg finally a pretty, medium-length piece that will take me motivation i dont have to play"

12a (bc i'm old :pensive:) was so bad for me bc I was already nervous but adding in the leaks I just like froze on the test and then said screw it in the last 15 minutes. Surprisingly when I said "screw it let's just try and do as many problems as possible idc if they're right" I actually was able to power thru and raise what would've been like a 60 to an 80. So on the 12b I told myself I was just going to speedrun and ended with a score of 94.5 so I guess it?? worked??? 14 right 4 wrong I think

@amyannieaop that worked the same for me woah
after I screwed up 10a, my mentality for 10b was basically to do as many problems as I can and let that be it since I doubted I would qual through 10b (since my 10b score was almost 10 pts lower than my 10a score last year and there're more number theory problems on 10b and I'm bad at nt)

and I was like ok you know what I still have another year of amc 10 so it's ok if I don't make aime this year

then somehow, I got 16 problems correct

probably because I just didn't pressure myself as much compared to 10a, which I basically thought is the only chance for aime qual (because 10b has number theory and all that stuff)
