everything everywhere all at once

this is my first rated R movie and it is a sci-fi about an chinese-american / asian girl who turns evil due to her mother and her's feuding relationship
i'll give an overall summary but like my last book review i will include spoilers (i'll give a warning so you can not read ahead if you don't want it)
so basically evelyn wang is a chinese immigrant who suddenly gets the ability to switch between universes. there are multiple evelyn wangs living different lives because every choice made leads to a different universe being created (or at least that's what i assume)
so the funny part is that in order to switch you have to do something rly weird (like eating chapstick)
evelyn's husband, waymond, switches into alpha waymond, the same person from a different dimension
he tells her that he has watched her die in very other universe and that the cause of her death has always been being murdered. evelyn is like "why would anyone want to kill me?"
SPOILERS: skip ahead to my overall review part if you don't want any spoilers
so evelyn has a daughter named joy wang, who is lesbian and has a girlfriend. evelyn refused to understand her sexuality and when introducing becky (joy's girlfriend) to gong gong, her father and joy's grandfather, she introduced her as her friend and not her girlfriend.
these events, which made joy feel really unwanted from her mother, lead to anger, and in a multiverse, alpha joy wang becomes jobu tupaki, a really evil nihilist. jobu has control of all multiverses. even if this is a spoiler i'm not going to include every detail but basically it turns out that jobu goes around trying to find an evelyn that understands her and kills every evelyn that doesn't.
there is also a bagel that she created which is basically a symbolism of her depression, anger, and despair.
the reason why this movie is rated R is because of some inappropriate s*xual scenes, such as jobu killing police officers using .
evelyn originally begins to become like jobu and is persuaded into going into the bagel (basically dying in all universes) with jobu, but waymond gives her a coming of age moment as he says, "if nothing matters, why can't we all just be kind?"
in the end, there is a confrontation between every evelyn and joy in the world and in the world focus, joy tells evelyn that she thinks it's better for them to be alone. evelyn starts choosing kindness to fight her enemies instead. you can see this through the ratatouille movie reference in this
evelyn then starts telling joy every reason why she hates her. but then tells her that even after that, she still wants to be with her. that she loves her.
this basically saves jobu from being sucked in by the bagel and ceasing to exist. all of the characters (also i left out the tax manager who plays a pretty big role imo but this is a short really crappy summary) help to pull jobu out and she becomes joy again, a normal asian daughter who fixes her relationship with evelyn.

honestly this was like the best movie i've ever seen.
some scenes were pretty uncomfortable obviously but i was sobbing my eyes out because as an asian kid myself i can relate to the feuds with my mother, how sometimes i feel like hopping into a bagel that ends everything, how sometimes i feel like i want to hop multiverses and find a mother who's perfect for me
in the end, like waymond says, "if nothing matters, why can't we just be kind?"
i feel like the movie was confusing in a way, but once the ending came near and i began to understand it, it struck me.
it's truly a masterpiece.
i personally think this was so hard for me to express in words because you have to watch it to understand what i mean, but i almost burst into tears in the middle of english class (where i watched this). our teacher skipped all the explicit scenes, but this other chinese dude next to me told me i had to watch those scenes because it was important. so i took a deep breath and watched them at home.
as weirded out as i was, it was kind of worth it. not that, but because it played a key role in helping me understand the movie.
my god it was good.
michelle yeoh was perfect for this role and so was stephanie hsu. i was so moved by their acting and this is what makes me want to do something good like them, too. it makes me want to create a google doc and write something like this.
my character rankings:
1) waymond + joy (tie)
2) jobu tupaki (one of the movies where i actually liked the villain)
3) evelyn wang
4) deidre beaubeirdre (sorry for not mentioning her at all, but if you watch it you'll understand)
5) everyone else
i thought the ratatouille reference was really clever
everything everywhere all at once was the last place i'd expected to see it again but it played out so well.
everything everywhere all at once rating: 90/100
