in defense of tkam // talking

to kill a mockingbird is and will always be one of my favourite books btw if ur a fan u should join me in talking about it because i literally can talk about it for hours
many people dislike to kill a mockingbird because it is about racism and includes slurs, and ofc for further opinions but these are the most common i think
in my opinion, i think the lesson it teaches outweighs the negative emotions you feel when reading the book
america has not gonna lie gotten very sensitive about racist terms, which i completely agree with. you shouldnt be saying slurs like its the word "the".
you have got to remember that tkam was written in the time when african americans were commonly referred to as the word. it's not okay, but it is even taught in that book that you shouldnt say the slur (by atticus, saying that the term is "common" (meaning of an uneducated person))
tkam honestly speaks out against racism, if i look at it that way ;; not so much about gender norms, but it definitely speaks out about racism
maybe if harper lee told us more about the african american characters, the book could have been racist, because she is white.
but we never get to know many of the african american characters ;; the closest we get is with calpurnia, the cook, and she's pretty happy without any context of outside racism
if there isn't an opportunity, there isn't
the book is purely opinion and outside witness. it's described by fact and realism ;; what really happened in the court
for context it's about the main character's dad, atticus, a lawyer, defending a falsely accused african-american man (tom) of r**ing a white woman (mayella)
honestly i think that i love the book so much more due to the characters, one of the best characters being atticus
he's the best father ever, and as a fan of both watchman and tkam although i like him so much better in tkam i will still love him despite his portrayal in watchman. (ff: atticus is based off amasa coleman lee, harper lee's real dad, so atticus was technically real)
my favourite character list goes from:
atticus
boo radley
scout
jem
dill
calpurnia
miss maudie
miss dubose
heck tate
tom robinson (who i really dont know very well, but feel literally terrible for him)
aunt alexandra
[huge gap]
fricking bob ewell
FRICKING MAYELLA EWELL??!!??!?!!
anyways the relationship between atticus and his children make my heart melt every time
and i cant believe that he's a literal real life character??
if i had a dad like atticus
my life would be complete
i love the book so much someone talk to me about it
