Blogs About Professions

by rrusczyk, Apr 26, 2010, 2:53 AM

A few weeks ago, I mentioned the Female Science Professor blog that Osud recommended to me as a way to read about life as a professor. I've been looking for more similar blogs, and asking others, but without much success. So, well, I wrote someone who has an audience that would take care of me.

Now I have tons of professions to read about. One of the comments hit precisely why I think these these blogs are valuable: "The current method of figuring out what you hate by spending 5 years doing it sucks."

Correction: FSM is in the physical sciences, not the life sciences. If I had to guess, I would say she is a chemist.

Also, if you are ever curious about the profession of bespoke tailoring, this is an excellent blog: http://www.englishcut.com/

Indeed; I blew that one. I sent that email to Cowen right after reading one of her posts in which she's talking about someone in biology, and I incorrectly assumed she is, too. I think it's interesting that she's able to convey so much about her work without ever making clear exactly what discipline she's in.

I worked in several different fields, both in science and liberal arts, in undergrad, and I found that the mechanics of doing, managing and presenting your research are quite similar across fields. I think that the most major differences came from whether your research was based around a lab or on individual effort, and whether your research focused on the collection of new data or interpretation of data that had already been analyzed by many other scholars.

In my own experience, I learned how to run a lab group from a geologist, how to give conference presentations from a biochemist, how to manage my career in graduate school from a sociologist, and how to write papers from a classicist. And your math site, for instance, for how to teach problem solving. I run application and such by any of these people, even though my field is different from theirs.

I guess it's just a matter of seeing clearly what would be relevant to your own situation.

My guess that she's a chemist comes from the facts that she works in a lab, her lab gathers a lot of data not in collaboration with other labs, and she reports on a chemical spill one of her colleagues was involved in.
