A good day for me and the SDMC

by rrusczyk, Dec 14, 2006, 4:14 AM

I'm officially handing over my SDMC organizing duties to one of the parents who have helped so much with the SDMC over the last 1.5 years. Henry Lau is taking over administration, organization, and all the other stuff that has distracted me from focusing on teaching at the SDMC, which I enjoy much more. I am very, very happy about this. This is a double win: I won't have to do it anymore, and Henry will do a much better job of it than I did. (He already has the new SDMC site up at http://www.sdmathcircle.org; I'll have to redirect the SDMC link on the AoPS sidebar there when I get to the office tomorrow morning.)

Special thanks to Ravi Boppana, who inspired me by example. He built a very nice MATHCOUNTS program at Dalton (in their first year they came within .25 of winning NY state), then Ravi did something amazing: he left it in good hands by connecting Dalton with David Hankin. When I learned about that, I began thinking, 'Wow! Ravi's my hero: I wish I could do that with the SDMC.' And then Henry offered to take it over, and the other hero parents will continue to help him as they've helped me so much. Now, I'll get to focus on teaching more, which is why I started the SDMC in the first place.

Congrats on finding an organizer for the SD Math Circle. I'm glad to have been of indirect help.

The irony is that I ended up coaching the Dalton teams in part because I was inspired by something you said when we first met here in NYC. You said something to the effect of: "Lots of parents and students whine about the math culture in their schools. Few do anything about it."

Oh, and for the record, our margin of loss wasn't 0.25. (We lost to Hunter by 1.5.) I still don't know how we finished second in the state in our first year...

Cool, the two titans of competitive mathematics on the same page!

Mad props on both starting SDMC and successfully guarantying its continuing success. Your SDMC was actually my inspiration for starting the Math Circle in Baltimore!
