Nobody Knows Anything

by rrusczyk, Jan 23, 2009, 3:41 PM

That's the way I often feel when I read articles (and especially when I listen to TV or radio) about what's going on in the economy today.

This article is a great example of what I'm talking about. How bad is it going to get? Who knows? But my real point is, "How bad is it? Who knows?" Kinda scary, to be sure, but it makes me very suspicious of anyone who speaks very definitively about what to do. (I'm not saying we should do nothing, but I am saying we should be very skeptical about anyone who speaks with great confidence about what must be done.)

"...why are Americans so gloomy, fearful and even panicked about the current economic slump?" lol, wow. I love how they point to the 1991 crisis as they can just as easily have pointed to the other $ 3$ or so regressions that we've had to show WHY we should be worrying; not counting, of course, the Great Depression...

I guess people do not like uncertainty so they like to like to believe people representing high levels of confidence and optimism to guide them. Whether this confidence and optimism is based on actual facts and knowledge and thus actually helpful is a different topic. But success is often correlated with confidence.

For relationships women strongly aim at men that display status and confidence. In politics just look at Obama who says "yes, we can".
