One last success of the old independent study program

by rrusczyk, May 20, 2007, 2:47 PM

solafidefarms started a project as part of the Independent Study program over a year ago. He has done a lot more (a lot, lot more) with it since, and recently took it to ISEF. A $\$[/dollar]15,000$ scholarship, a couple other prizes, and having an asteroid named after him later, he came home.

Nice work.

(To be honest, we at AoPS can't take a whole lot of credit for this one - he came up with the whole thing on his own, and I think our most notable recommendation upon seeing it might have been, `It's time you to learn LaTeX'. But nonetheless, we're very happy to see his success.)

Thank you :).

My project is entitled Improper Fractional Base Encryption. Essentially I applied improper fractional bases to encryption in a secure manner, which hadn't been done before. There are two really cool things about this: 1) it has an integrated subliminal channel, so a second message can be hidden inside the first message so the second message cannot be proven to even exist, and 2) it applies some of the number theoretical aspects of asymmetric encryption to symmetric encryption, opening up a whole new area of encryption.

I'd talk about it more, but I have applied for a patent on it, and I don't want to give too much away. If you have more questions, I'll try to answer them.

Sorry, but from their homepage it says that he won 1,500 dollars, not 15,000.

Just checking.

And congratulations, that sounds ground breaking.

That was the cash prize I got for a 2nd award [which is also where I got the asteroid named for me]. The Alcatel-Lucent scholarship is indeed 15,000. Check out the last page of http://sciserv.org/isef/results/sao07.pdf.
