Juarez

Reading/hearing more about the drug lord wars in Juarez, coming just a few months after the bloodbaths in Tijuana, I have two thoughts:
1) I'm glad I live in the United States.
2) I've long thought that ending the War on Drugs is one of the key steps (if not *the* key step) to dealing with a lot of the social problems we have in the US. I now think it might be one of the key steps to dealing with a lot of the problems we have in the Western hemisphere, if not the whole world. How can there be robust economic development in Mexico (um, or Afghanistan) when the rule of law can't withstand the drug lords? The Mexican government can't deal with the drug lords, but I'll bet well-regulated legalization could, just as it did with the end of Prohibition. It's certainly worth trying...
But what US politician will have the guts to say any of this, at least when whatever prize they seek is near?
