This, if it pans out, seems rather unsurprising to me. Relatively fast-reproducing species are better off competitively if they are programmed to knock off the non-breeders, so as to reduce competition for resources for the still-active breeders. I've sometimes joked that I'm doing AoPS because if I'm going to be healthy for a very long time, it's likely the best students today who are going to figure out how. But I'm only somewhat joking. Get to work. You only have a few decades to help me out here. Preferably sooner rather than later, really
