Education System is Tough Nut to Crack

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

We have a new Foundation project through which we will give a generous stipend to 5-10 middle schools in the San Diego area to start new math teams. The goal of the program is to build math clubs/problem solving activities where they didn't exist before. The teachers will get a nice stipend, and have access to extra funds to enroll in MOEMS, MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8. We'll also provide some materials and direction.

I suspect if we could get in front of teachers we could get their attention (but maybe not - there was no interest when I talked to high school teachers at the UCSD contest, but then, I didn't mention how much money the teachers would be paid, which will likely be in the $\$[/dollar]50$ per hour range). However, I'm finding it very hard to get anyone in the school system to take me seriously, even though I already have the money. My next step is to follow Larry Jacobson's advice (he's the current executive director of MATHCOUNTS) - give up on the math administrators and go after the politicians (i.e., the superintendent). Altogether, it's really frustrating, though. I've probably spent a dozen hours trying to get the attention of people who are paid to care about math education, but I'm not getting very far.

I think it might have to do with the teachers not wanting to spend their time teaching, or because the teachers are unused to teaching competition-style math.

That may explain the disconnect with the high school teachers, though that was just a group of 15 or so. My real frustration now is with the administration, which isn't allowing any easy way to reach the middle school teachers.

Maybe I'll try the newspaper.

This is intended to be a pilot program - if it works, maybe we will someday.

If you mean format for the program, we're basically aiming at paying teachers to run math teams and math clubs more or less as they see fit. We'll require they be involved to some degree with certain programs and provide guidance, but it will be mostly up to them to structure the program to fit their circumstances.

I know there has been alot of talk between me and some teachers (middle school mathcounts coach and some highschool teachers) about starting a program like that. However what would really drive the program is getting the word out in schools. My math club garners about 3-4 regulars, people simply dont see an incentive to come. however if i could push the program at all id love to do it.

Tell your middle school coach to contact me if he/she is interested - that would be a big help!

What's the point? AoPS-style math is too hard for most people. That's surprising, but you have to realize that over 90% of people aren't interested in AoPS-style math.
