I stumped Reid Barton

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

I heard a rumor that they had a 'Spell this mathematician's name.'

Not that I qualify as a mathematician, but allegedly the only one that Reid missed was 'Rusczyk'. Heh.

I can too!

R U S C Z Y K. Rusczyk.

It took me a while to learn to spell that. The fact that there are three consonants in a row confused me.

In any online class, I see your name several hundred times, and I STILL can't spell it. Gosh, I feel like an idiot. Its also in the AoPS books.

EDIT:10/21/05 I can spell it now! :D :D :D

I always pronounced it "Ruh-sick". My dad keeps on saying "Ruh-skee" for some reason though...

I'm sure it would be much, MUCH harder to spell it if you hadn't seen it in writing before as I imagine was the case with Reid Barton.

Anyway, can you give the proper pronunciation, Mr. Rusczyk? I pronounce it like "Ruh-shik" (or something like that...I'm not very good at writing down how I pronounce things :? ).

Ruh-sick

(Though last year one of our SDMC parents, an immigrant from Poland, told me I'm pronouncing it wrong. She pronounced it something like Ruse-check.)

And Reid has seen it in print, since I've swapped emails with him regarding MOP homework. But he hasn't seen it as much as y'all have.

Well I guess the "check" part kind of makes sense if you think of the pronunciation of Czech Republic etc.

Oh, and yes, I can spell your name too. :P I mean, I've probably seen it a couple hundred times and typed it at least twenty or so times...so... :)

I'll admit--I misspelled your name. I probably should have caught it, but they were going very fast so I didn't check it...(I spelled it without the 'c')

It's true that in most Eastern European countries the cz tends to make the "ch" sound in english but it all depends how the person wishes for it to be pronounced.

I was so happy when they gave that. For some reason I've got that down. Plus it's so fun to spell out R - U - S - C - Z - Y - K WOOT
