New Article about Why Discrete Math is Important

by rrusczyk, Oct 5, 2007, 8:04 PM

As you might imagine, we sell more algebra and geometry books than we do counting and number theory books. Same goes for class enrollments. The reason is obvious: that's what our curriculum is geared towards. But we at AoPS think that discrete math, such as counting and number theory, is extremely important. So, DPatrick, who wrote both our counting books, has written an article about why discrete math is important.

? Speaking as someone who has an admitted bias against combinatorics, it seems that in advanced mathematics, discrete mathematics becomes markedly less important than the more standard topics of algebra, analysis, and geometry. Of course, the opposite is undoubtedly true in theoretical computer science, but my fields lie mainly in math and physics...

Also I promise I will respond to your email by this weekend... Yeah.

I did not know that they are called Discrete Mathematics!!! I fell in love with them and I could not describe this interest to my counselor. Now I know!

In my program I spend more time on discrete math than almost anything else. It has really forced my kids to think, which I believe is one of the most important things Mathcounts accomplishes.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to develop these two books. The first book is super for my 6th graders and the intermediate book is really challenging. It is going to be great for the kids that fly through everything else.

Great set of books!!!!!
