Getting back into blogging - big week at AoPS

by rrusczyk, Jul 1, 2006, 4:28 PM

I'm having a tough time getting back into blogging since we moved to the new server. Part of it is that the blog stuff doesn't look like it used to, which makes it easy for me to break my habit. Also, it doesn't yet quite work right, but it's getting there. Ultimately, I think we'll be able to make the blogging system considerably more robust than the old system. (Please pitch in your comments about what needs to be done to the system.)

A weak excuse is that it was a big week at AoPS - I should be blogging the big wins, not using them as an excuse not to blog. Specifically, we published the next book in our new series, Introduction to Number Theory. Also, AoPSWiki is growing faster than I imagined it would. I'm hopeful that it will become a great repository not just of mathematics, but of math events like contests and scholarships, and math tools, like LaTeX and Geometry programs. We'll see.

I'm finally getting back to writing the Intro Algebra book, which consumes much of my writing energy. Speaking of which, back to writing about functions now. . . (Yikes this book is gonna be long. I'm just under 300 pages now - I think it's going to be longer than the geometry book.)

Perhaps "A Tale of Two Variables" would be a better name for the book.

Indeed, it's not fun to blog with the new blog look. It is a very good excuse not to blog. Whoever is working on the blogs, hurry up ;).

Personally, I liked the old style of the blog index. The new one makes the blogs look too much like the forum, and the fun of blogging is diminished when your behaves too much like a forum topic. I would recommend bringing back the old system, even if it gets fewer blogs on each page.

We have a lot of flexibility in how the blog index page looks - can you make some suggestions as to what might be better?

I think what I liked about the old setup was the fact that each blog kind of got its own "space" with an icon, description, name of the author, date of last entry, etc, all in a little box. The new format has everything in kind of a chart that's not only more difficult to read, it makes each blog less "special".

As for other changes, nothing comes immediately to mind, but I'll give it some thought.
