Jr USAMO

When we funded the expansion of the USAMO to 500 people, Zuming floated the idea of having a Junior USAMO. Now that idea is a reality.

I think this gives younger students an excellent target (particularly those few dozen students who are mathematically beyond MATHCOUNTS but still in middle school). I'll be interested to see how the test evolves.

Yeah but don't you think shrinking the qualification process for red MOP to two questions is... wrong?

I agree with Mewto55555, although it won't affect me (YAY!). Also, I think they should have still had 500 get into USAMO, and then, say, 150 get into JMO.

Yeah, the qualification for Red MOP being only those 2 problems strikes me as unusual. I'll ask the AMC folks about it when I see them next week. I'm guessing that they were thinking that qualification for Red MOP is already essentially a 2-question game (which is more or less true), but codifying that like this does, I think, adjust the strategy for taking the test for 9th graders relative to other test takers, which, I think, puts the 9th graders at a bit of a disadvantage relative to other test takers.
