Interesting fund-raising idea

I spent a half hour or so with Jeff Boyd (coach of last year's national champ team) and Claudia Allums (Neal Wu's coach). They both had a lot of neat things they do for their team; I'll try to remember them all later. For now, I'll pass on a couple interesting fund-raising tidbits that Jeff uses:

1) Go after real estate companies. They put their name on your shirts, give you a little pile of money, and in return, when you win, you advertise to everyone what school district to move into (which in turn raises real estate prices, which in turn raises realators paychecks).

2) Jeff lets his kids keep their trophies for a few days, then they have to return them to the school until the year-end banquet. Then, he invites his sponsors and prospective sponsors to the banquet, where they see a wall of 1000 trophies staring at them.

Interesting indeed.

#1 is certainly true. I know my parents partially chose our house when we moved to SC based on the school my sister and I would be zoned for.

#2 sounds like something we (my team) might have wanted to try this year. We had the banquet and we had the trophies there...and we actually got the superintendent of the district over. But actually, I think we accomplished a more important goal of letting our teacher know just how much of a difference she and math team make to us.

Great move, both in rewarding the teacher (i.e. giving her morale to continue) and in getting the superintendent there (thus giving the coach the professional support to continue). Very cool.

Whoa what happens if no one really cares about Mathcounts because we always win the regional but fail at state? In our case, it's not that we aren't aware -- we just don't care.

He's building more than a MATHCOUNTS program - he goes to 50 or so events (I think) a year. If no one cares about much about MATHCOUNTS, hopefully you can find other local or regional events at which there will be an attainable but not automatic goal.

What happens if that's not possible since you live in Cornfield, IL? :D

Buses can take you out of Cornfield.

I lived in Cottonfield, AL, and still managed a couple dozen math contests a year.
