On Vacation

I think one of the biggest values of extracurricular math activities such as contests and camps is social.

As an example of that, I'm heading on vacation tomorrow - a 9-day trip in Chile, biking, hiking, rafting, etc. Our group consists of three couples -- the other two guys are people I know from math competitions back in Alabama. Of all the good things I got from high school math contests, they're right up there at the top of the list.

That's so true. In retrospect, math contest-related events (especially ARML) were one of the few situations in high school where I felt completely comfortable being myself. The social side of contests is probably a big part of what got me so excited about them, which is in turn what led me to stay involved through volunteer work after graduation.

Wow! Have fun in Chile - although you'll miss the Super Bowl.

Quite frankly, I think our Math Society at my high school is more social than math related, so no problems there :)

(And about the Super Bowl - my friend who moved to Cali before the start of the school year said it best: "super bowl at 3 pm is just wrong. how do west coast people live?")
