SDMC Overwhelmed

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

We had our first day of the San Diego Math Circle. Around 70 people RSVPed to say they were coming.

About 110 came. It was total mayhem. We desperately need more room and more instructors. Hmmm... Nice problems to have, but very tiring ones to have. We also need greater organization.

Fortunately, the parents were outstanding in helping out. (But one didn't show up until an hour late to pick up her son  ) But we'll have to be more organized next time around.

I'm too tired to post much about it now. I have no idea what kind of follow-through this will have. Will only half of them show up because it was so crowded this time or do we have a gravitational mass that will just grow and grow. I don't know. . . We'll see. I am a little sad that I spent far too much time running around and organizing and only spent 45 minutes or so with each of the two groups I taught, when I intended to spend 75 minutes with them.

I have a quick question: is it held actually in San Diego? if so, many people would have to go cross-country (which is a sport - probably with a purpose for math lovers :D ).

Yes - it is held in the UCSD Math Department.

If you're ever in SD when the Math Circle is being held, we're happy to have visitors!

The SDMC was awesome.

From what I saw near the end of the Euler group, I would say that most of them enjoyed it and will probably return. I'd expect the same amount of people to return (and possibly increase if they told their friends). I'm just guessing though...actually I'm not; my calculator said so. :P

Perhaps with such large class sizes, during the competitions:
1) Split the group into two and take them into separate rooms.
2) Compete as normal, with a winning team in each classroom.
3) Compare combined scores/winning team scores/something like that.

More competition. Or split the group into more advanced and less advanced problem solvers...something like that. Also, for competitions, we could do something like the various summer camps and have relays...space permitting, of course.

It's that 'space permitting' thing that's a problem.

Here's an idea I'm toying with:

Have the individuals on the winning team compete for a prize at the end of the game. However, this contest will be handicapped by the contestants. Each contestant gets 10 points to allot to other contestants. Whoever gets the most points has to answer the most questions to win. . .

That's a pretty good idea. The only problem might be that everyone might stick it on only one or two people...maybe a limit on how they can allot the points?

Also, people might show favoritism and then block out everyone but one person...

Maybe when a problem is answered then the team has to put the name of the person who solved it...then at the end the amount of points earned by one person handicaps them. As long as the groups don't know that that's how the handicap will be determined... That would get interesting with negative points.

I was really surprised when I saw so many people there. The crowd was almost 4 times as large as last year.

By the way, I RSVPed. ;)
