A great article.

Our own son was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma at 3 months. Had he been diagnosed a year earlier the standard treatment would have been enucleation of both eyes and radiation.

Thanks to the kind of research described in this article, we were able to use a new combination of chemotherapy and laser surgeries that preserved sight in one of his eyes.

This experience is one reason why we take the freedom to innovate in medicine very seriously. How many people will needlessly suffer or die because a therapy was developed too late for them?

In terms of supporting this kind of research there are many worthy charities, but I like the direct approach of supporting the people who are going to make the breakthroughs in research, for example:

Indeed. When people ask me why I do what I'm doing, I sometimes answer that I want to live as well at 85 as my parents did at 50, and AoPS students are the ones who are going to make that happen.

They think I'm joking.

I'm not.
