And the Rich Get Richer

While at the North Carolina Teachers Convention (if I have time, more on that later), I met several outstanding teachers at a dinner Harold Reiter hosted. The two I spent most of my time talking to are young teachers at Ligon Middle School, whose students placed 1-2-3 at their state MATHCOUNTS contest last year. The school is the type that gets a lot of talent, but having met these two teachers, I see another reason they go 1-2-3 at States. One of the teachers solved a pretty tough problem almost as fast (OK, maybe even faster) than I solved it the first time I heard it. (I can't share the problem, as it is related to a USAMTS problem from this round.) The other has produced a large pile of problems and puzzles at his site, AGMath.com.

Ligon... :O

Ligon, a middle school, had the most USAMO qualifiers in NC last year (those three people)... the magnet high school they feed into, Enloe, had none. (Though Enloe admittedly had 2 former qualifiers who barely missed.)
