Academic math world getting more involved in MS & HS

by rrusczyk, Jun 30, 2006, 9:47 PM

I met today David Eisenbud and Jim Sotiros from MSRI. David is the Director of MSRI, and very well-connected in the academic community. MSRI is going to start to give grants for math circles around the country, in the hopes of getting more universities to start math circles. I encouraged him to consider supporting math teams and other grassroot efforts like homeschool groups. They seem interested in extending the grants to these groups; I'll post here if I hear they are for sure. They'll also be building some materials for math circles, such as lesson plans (some built by one Sam Vandervelde). David also is very interested in having a Spellbound for math filmed. I hope he's successful!
