Math Contest Trophies

by rrusczyk, Jan 14, 2008, 12:28 AM

Recently, my parents asked me what they should do with the various math contest trophies I won in middle and high school. They've asked me this numerous times, and every time, I tell them the same thing: pitch 'em.

Then, at the MAA/AMS Joint Meetings, I met Cliff Stoll, of Acme Klein Bottles. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned him before. He commented during one of his uproariously funny sales pitches that he might even be convinced to donate one or two as trophies for math events. I recalled seeing pictures of some at HMMT, as well. To those of you who run math contests: this is a good idea --- trophies that people will want to keep. I know that if I had received a Klein Bottle trophy, I wouldn't tell my parents to pitch it.

Ooh, thanks for the idea! I might try to look into that for Stanford's tournament this year. Although if any SFBA people read this, I'm not making any promises!

Hmm, I believe that this will be the last time in a while that there will be a Chargers' victory to celebrate.

What a neat idea......a little expensive.....but it would be really cool to presents these kinds of trophies to the kids and thenjust watch them try and figure them out. I may have to try this at one of our local Mathcounnts tournaments.

I think if you write him and explain your program, you may be able to negotiate a good deal. He's a very interesting guy, and very dedicated to challenging students. He even volunteered for a while as a physics teacher at a local middle school. I imagine his class was a blast.
