USAMO awards ceremony, Day 1

We had the sponsors' reception yesterday at MAA headquarters. Basically what you'd expect - everyone in suits (except me
- saving mine for tomorrow), trays of bite-size food, etc. The sponsors each had to give little speeches. I had a number of interesting conversations, including one with Melanie Wood about the possibility of the US sending a team to the Girls' Math Olympiad in China. If anyone out there has
burning a hole in their pocket, give her a call. She and Zuming are putting together a plan to build a team and potentially a training camp for that event.
I also had an interesting dinner with Harold Reiter, Kiran Kedlaya, and John Kenelly. It was the first time I've met John. He's the guy who helped rescue the US hosting the IMO in 2001 by raising money at the last minute. He points to a very unlikely person as the rescuer... Trent Lott. It appears John was stuck on the runway on a parked plane sitting next to Lott's wife. John told her about the fix they were in, and she told him that her husband might be able to help. John was skeptical until he found out who she was. He met with Trent Lott, then some government agencies suddenly found some money.
