Good Day at the SDMC

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

We had our second meeting of the high school group at the SDMC today. Now that we have more rooms, I'm hoping to find a couple more instructors and host the high school group more frequently. It's an excellent group - I taught invariants today and interesting observations came from all over the room (which had 31 students).

And, as for the future of the SDMC, we had 45 students show up for a meeting of our youngest students (roughly grades 5-7). We're settling in to a very nice size for the Math Circle. Now to find a couple more instructors. . .

At times last year, we wondered if the SDMC was really worth the effort we were putting in to it. Now that we've enlisted the help of the parents in recruiting and organizing and raising money, I think it is clearly worth it. We often preach the value of establishing culture. It's pretty cool to watch one form. We even have a group of professors at UCSD who volunteered to host Sunday classes for those who can't make it on Saturdays. Very cool.

Yay SDMC! :)

After ARML practice, I think we should do something like a combination of the power round/SDMC games. Pretty much a team proof-writing, but probably with problems slightly easier than the power round, to make it a little more accessible to everyone. For those who don't know how to write a proof, a proof-writing class would probably be cool too. The only problem with the team-proof contest is that there probably won't be enough time to grade it before class ends.

It would be really cool if there was more activity in the SDMC thread too...I don't think many people in the SDMC are aware it exists/check it.

Time to start on that invariants worksheet...

I always enjoy SDMC meetings, but this one seemed to stand out amongst all the rest.

About funding, I have an idea. One of the parents who works for Qualcomm can write a letter to Mr. Jacobs, the founder. I'm pretty sure he'd make a donation.

After all, he donated 200 million to UCSD, so a thousand or two for a group of motivated students shouldn't be a problem.

If you have anyone who can get us in front of Mr. Jacobs, let me know!

I'll ask my mom today, since she works at Qualcomm. :D
