I just learned that Joe Holbrook, who was instrumental in building the math team at AAST in New Jersey, passed away today. I think I've been in regular contact with Joe longer than just about any teacher I know (and longer than most people I know!), and think the country could solve many of its problems in recruiting dedicated teachers by simply cloning him.
He once told me about his leaving his previous career to go into teaching, and that he explained to his friends that the students helped him stay young. I think he largely succeeded in that, and was able to stay in the classroom well past the age most people retire. He kept his passion for his kids all the way. I hope I love my work at that age as much as he loved his.
