SDMC

I just returned from an SDMC year-end get-together at a park by the ocean. I have very high hopes for next year, thanks to the involvement of the parents. We even found another SDMC instructor among their ranks. If all goes as planned, we'll be in a good position by the end of next year to write a how-to about building a local culture in problem solving mathematics (with plenty of how-not-tos from our past experience). We thought earlier this year about disbanding the SDMC. I'm very happy we decided instead to first ask the parents to pitch in.
A note to the parents of SDMC: thank you very much - we would have given up without you.
A note to parents elsewhere: I believe there are many people near almost any population center who will put in the time to teach if you will put in the time to organize. Building a culture is not a problem we can simply throw money at - it takes time and effort. But it can be done.
