File Sharing

We're starting to hear more and more rumors of students sharing their transcript files from classes. I'm not sure what we should do about it, but it's very sad that people steal so freely, particularly from an organization like ours that gives away so much for free. I suspect this is part of the reason our enrollments are much lower for Olympiad classes than for other classes. Surely difficulty is a factor, but I'm guessing more of the top high school students know each other from contests/summer camps and are more susceptible to the sort of peer pressure that might lead to this sort of theft. Middle school students still have a greater respect for authority. I'm not saying all the older students are like this - many have a clear sense of honor and understand that the ultimate result of this will be for us to stop offering some of our more advanced classes. As it stands, it's not clear that the school even breaks even, particularly considering the extremely low prices we charge (around 1/3-1/4 that of EPGY in dollars per hour for comparable classes). I'd hope at least that those of our students who hear of this speak up to the offenders. We provide an enormous amount of material for free - it's very disappointing to hear of people stealing what we do sell to support ourselves.

Perhaps we'll have to look into whatever technology it is places use that allow you to view pages but not save them, thereby making it impossible for students to save transcripts. Would be a bummer for our honest students, but it beats having to close the school. (Note: We're nowhere near doing that now, but I could see it coming to that if this sort of activity becomes more widespread. At the very least, I'm already considering folding the Olympiad classes into WOOT and not offering them as independent units anymore.)

Hm. I know a couple people have been asking me for the WOOT tests (and the WOP tests last year); usually I just have to give some bad excuse like citing my lack of knowledge with PDF documents ... they are still getting out though, I think.

I'm not surprised to hear they're getting out, too, but I appreciate your being unwilling to help in that regard. Next time someone asks, send 'em a link to my post here.

A further addendum: those people pursuing the WOOT tests are acting a little bizarrely - they can just go to Kalva or our new Contests page for more practice Olympiad tests than they'd ever know what to do with. The structure, classes, and feedback on the exams (particularly for newcomers to writing proofs) are far more valuable than the tests alone.

Maybe they want to see how well they measure up against WOOTlers :).

Oh yeah thanks for the money from the Duke thingy (and for last year too). It is pretty spiffy. We all gave a rousing cheer this year (spurred on by solafidefarms).

woow, I'm glad that this was brought up. I had considered this... file sharing, but I restraint myself.

"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."

I read it off somewhere and I stick to that.

I completely agree with Richard! I think that you should respect the honour code of the online classes. I feel it is hard to keep that foundation alive. Mathlinks would have been closed up due to legal issues. Same probably happened to Kalva. But at least it is still online. I think it is a huge feature of AoPS Inc. that the forum and especially the Resources section is publically available and not only to those subscribing to the classes. I like to compare that to MIT's OCW. Contrary to Kalva you can always ask about problems and will mostly get feedback. That is quite unique and must be highly appreciated. Of course nobody can take care for other as individual teacher. That is where AoPS Inc. online classes come into play. It is just a matter of fact that problem-solving at the level of olympiads can hardly be learned by oneself. Feedback, advice, hints into the right directions are invaluable for indidividual progress. I just can cite: "How would I have thought of that?" is the main idea. Solutions are nice but how could I come up with that. Another big feature are references where you get written that you are a good problem-solver. There are so many people out taking thousands of AP's with perfect grades, but yet do these guys know how to solve problems? And yes top-level teaching is expensive. It takes hours to think of ways which problems to choose, which solutions are instructive, to write up lectures etc. And you should not forget that you are taught by extremely high educated stuff that lives for their ideals and often retired from highly paid jobs in finance. Their dream is to be part of the problem-solving movement and to work with highly skilled talents and guide them in their development. Some of them even represented the US at the IMO. I just can congrat them for their efforts and wish AoPS Inc. a long life with very successful students. Keep up your motivation and the good work. I believe in you! :)

"Stealing" is a legal concept and I very much doubt that it applies here. You could turn sorrow to joy by selling printed transcripts, or access to a database of transcripts. Generally, mathematical information wants to be free, and you will run afoul of the problem solving culture if you try to restrict communication. Remember Microsoft versus the software pirates.
