The Price of Mathematical Ignorance

My in-laws saw a lot they wanted to buy and build a new house on. It was listed for 149,500 dollars. They asked to have 3% knocked off the price, and the seller said no. Then they bid 145,000 for the lot and the seller accepted their bid.

The seller didn't want to knock off ExACTLY 3%! Actually, 3% sounds a lot bigger than $4500. Ah, well, the eccentricities of uneducated people...

149500 * 0.97 = 145015.00 > 145000. So they got more than 3% off! :)

You've got to give your in-laws points for style.
