While I'd be the first to admit that AoPS is a tremendous resource for people looking to improve their problem-solving skills, I still think that you might be downplaying the benefits of attending an elite boarding school too much.
The internet has done a lot to break down most of these barriers, but there's still something to be gained by being surrounded on a daily basis by peers who in general are going to be very motivated and hard-working, and also attend a school that has the resources to help further a student's education. I say all this as someone who attended a regular public high school (which is not to say that I regret that, which I don't at all).

I think it really depends on what kind of person you are. You might be a very good independent learner who thrives when there isn't a lot of structure imposed on you. You might be someone who isn't well-served by being surrounded by pressures to make you something you're not (be it an athlete, a "leader", a musician, a "well-rounded" person, whatever). You might be someone who likes being around a wider demographic of people than you find at elite boarding schools. You might be someone who is very uncomfortable with face-to-face interaction, but for whom the internet opens you socially to experiences you couldn't have if you were in the same room with those very same people.
I don't think the elite schools are categorically good or categorically bad. I suspect they're a bit overrated, though, and I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have been any happier at one than I was at my very average public high school, which probably prepared me far better for what I do now than Princeton did.
